At MODEL, our vision wouldn’t be possible without the relentless input from those who share it. One such collaborator is Richard Stokes, Sustainability Team Leader at Arup. We recently sat down with Richard to discuss his work in helping us achieve Passive House and 6 Star Green Star certification. Here’s what he had to say: ‘With MODEL, we’re committing to a target early in the design process and focusing on how to solve it, rather than just aiming for a minimum requirement. Our work together has the potential to become a case study for others to be inspired by. Some say that high-performance, comfortable, environmentally-sound apartments are simply too expensive to create—we’re here to prove them wrong.” With Richard and the team at ARUP, Passive House and 6 Star Green Star certification, 50% reductions in embodied carbon and 9 NatHers are targets that MODEL can work towards with confidence.

MODEL’s evolution is shaped by our many close collaborators. We recently spoke with Atreyu de Lacy, Executive Director at TTW Engineers (Taylor Thomson Whitting) Design & Structural Engineering, who has been instrumental in guiding the design and structural engineering of one of our projects. Here’s what he had to say: ‘True innovation is a team sport, and MODEL has assembled a powerhouse of industry talent. It was a natural fit for us to join forces and drive positive change together. However, achieving this change requires more than just collaboration; it also necessitates maintaining an open dialogue with policymakers and planners to ensure that well-intentioned regulations don’t stifle the progress they aim to promote. This collaborative approach is one of the many key strategies that position MODEL to turn their ambitious vision into reality.’ With Atreyu’s diligent support, we’re confident that the boundaries of design and construction will be pushed in a positive direction, setting an industry standard that is long overdue.

We recently had a chat about his work as a building engineer designing and structurally engineering, with the BG&E team, one of our mass timber projects. Here’s what he had to say: ‘This project will be the exemplar in integrating sustainable design into urban development without compromising on quality or affordability. By challenging the conventional dependence on steel and concrete, it offers a compelling case for the efficacy and safety of mass timber at scale. This has the power to influence policy, leading to the easing of restrictions. It could also inspire further innovation and widespread adoption of sustainable building.’ With Dayne and the team at BG&E, MODEL’s goal will be achieved and the rental experience will forever be reshaped.
