City of Newcastle will leverage a $1 million Federal grant to integrate and expand our award-winning Accelerated Development Application (ADA) system across Upper Hunter Shire Council and Muswellbrook Shire Council as part of a memoranda of understanding with our Hunter neighbours. Since being introduced by Newcastle in 2022, the system has reduced the average assessment of low-impact, decision-ready development applications to seven days, down from the previous average of 40. Newcastle Art Gallery is proud to announce the acquisition of a significant work of art by globally acclaimed Quandamooka artist Megan Cope. Kinyingarra Guwinyanba (Off Country) features 44 poles adorned with a bouquet of rock oyster shells, which will be suspended within the new central atrium of the Gallery and be visible from the ground and first floors. This work has been generously donated by the Newcastle Art Gallery Foundation.

Congratulations to Alicia Lopez (Chief Information Officer) and Jazmin Webber (Apprentice Carpenter) at City of Newcastle for being recognised for their outstanding achievements at the 2024 Ministers' Awards for Women in Local Government. Alicia was the recipient of the Alternative Pathways Award in recognition of breaking down gender-based stereotypes. Jazmin was the recipient of the Young Achiever's Award in recognition of her incredible carpentry work, showcasing skill and dedication. The theme of the 42nd Symposium is "Understanding the Sydney Basin Today is the key to Tomorrow’s Sustainability", focusing upon both the changing times in the industry, changing environmental considerations, and the sedimentary nature of the basin.
