🌍🚶♀️🚴♂️ We’d like to congratulate Asia-Pacific Society for Physical Activity (ASPA) researchers—Professor Melody Ding, Dr Binh Nguyen, Tracy Nau and Dr Mengyun (Susan) Luo—on their latest collaborative publication in The Lancet Planetary Health. Their systematic review delves into the co-benefits of active travel interventions that extend beyond just physical activity.
Active travel initiatives like enhanced foot and bike paths, along with walk-to-school programs, engage various sectors such as planning, transportation, health and education. By understanding the extensive societal benefits of these interventions, we can foster cross-sectoral collaboration and investment.
Analysing evidence from 80 studies, the team identified variety of co-benefits: improved safety, health, economic stability, environmental quality and social outcomes. These findings underscore the immense potential of active travel to tackle pressing challenges like chronic diseases, traffic safety, air pollution and carbon emissions.
As Professor Melody Ding says: “Active travel in Australia is grossly underfunded, accounting for less than 2% of transport budgets compared to the 20% recommended by the UN. Our review shows that we are missing out on many gains that could otherwise result from active travel investment, which would benefit our health, social well-being, economy and environment.”
