We urge swift action to develop Australia's sovereign AI capabilities, expanding our skilled workforce and onshore AI infrastructure. In a submission to the Inquiry into the use and governance of artificial intelligence systems by public sector entities, we recommend that a national strategy should • secure AI tools tailored to Australia’s needs, addressing security, privacy, and ethical concerns, • scale investment in fundamental AI science and building high-performance computing and data facilities, helping reduce dependence on foreign resources, • enhance data governance and adherence to UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science, and • provide clear guidance on AI adoption which will benefit science agencies, ensuring responsible AI integration without undermining expertise and judgment. While growing up during China’s Cultural Revolution, newly elected Academy Fellow Emeritus, Prof Zheng-Xiang Li (Curtin University), never imagined he might attend university. But later, an encouraging comment from a teacher changed everything. Today, he’s transformed our understanding of Earth’s internal processes and the formation of supercontinents. Meet Australia’s brightest scientists in a weekly dose on #FellowFriday. #EarthSciences

We are working to promote good relationships between scientists and media in the Pacific in partnership with the Science Media Centre of New Zealand, Australian Science Media Centre and some of the Pacific Islands' most prominent scholars - including the Foundation Fellows for the Pacific Academy of Sciences who take on a role that shines a light on their science and the impact it has. While in Samoa, the Science Media Centres provided an informative session highlighting this critical relationship between media and academia and invited local journalists and the Pacific Academy Fellows to share experiences and learn from each other. "I appreciate the teachings and using a panel of journalists from NUSTV. It's wonderful to hear the experiences of the journalists from Samoa."
