As part of Cyber Security Awareness Month, an initiative led by the National Office of Cyber Security, the TCA would like to emphasise two powerful actions every small and medium business should take: enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) and keeping your software up-to-date. MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a secondary form of verification in addition to your password, making it much harder for hackers to access your accounts. Simultaneously, regularly updating your software ensures that you’re protected against the latest vulnerabilities. These simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of a cyber attack and keep your business secure. The TCA shares the government's vision that Australia can become a world leader in cyber security by 2030 - and modernising our regulatory framework is key to boosting cyber resilience. We are working closely with the government to ensure that cyber reforms build industry trust and enhance our national cybersecurity posture. Join the TCA in taking proactive measures to #StopTheHack and protect your digital assets. #CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth2024 #BeCyberWise #MFA #StaySecureOnline

On Wednesday evening, the TCA and its board were honoured to be hosted by the Speaker of the House, the Hon Milton Dick MP, in the Speaker’s private dining room. The Speaker was joined by his colleagues, the Hon Ed Husic MP, Minister for Industry and Science, Dr Andrew Charlton MP, the Special Envoy for Cybersecurity and Digital Resilience, and Mr Jerome Laxale MP, the co-chair of the Parliamentary Friendship Group on Tech and Innovation. We discussed Australia’s tech opportunity, its growth over the last ten years, and the challenges facing Australia’s tech ecosystem. In particular we discussed the importance of investment in Australia’s tech sector, especially through research and development, how to unlock barriers to private investment in Australia’s tech companies, and how to ensure that Australia can develop, attract and retain the world’s top tech talent. The TCA continues to engage across the parliament to ensure that Australia is in the best position to capitalise on our tech opportunity. We support the Australian Government's goal for Australia’s merger regime to be ‘faster, simpler and stronger’ and the significant opportunity for Government to use these reforms to grow Australia’s tech ecosystem. ✅ Mergers and acquisitions are critical for Australian companies to scale and be globally competitive and are a significant exit strategy and an incentive for innovation and growth in Australian tech startups. ✅ We welcome a transition to a merger regime that is clear, provides certainty about the assessment of transactions and the process by which they will be assessed, and results in a timely outcome. ✅ In particular, the TCA is pleased to see Government respond to the concerns raised by the TCA, resulting in the removal of the market concentration thresholds, changes to how serial acquisitions are assessed and rolling back the changes to the competition test across the Competition and Consumer Act. However, we still have some concerns regarding the proposed changes to the merger regime and their likely impact on the tech sector. 🔺 Thresholds that over-capture mergers, the potential for lengthy delays to the merger review process, and changes to the merger test. These changes may limit the ability of Australian companies to scale and reduce the incentives for founding innovative tech startups in Australia, making it a less attractive market to invest in. Lastly, we would like to acknowledge the critical ways the Government has taken on feedback from the TCA and others through the consultation process. We look forward to working closely with the Government to continuously improve changes to the Act to benefit innovation and investment in the Australian tech ecosystem. The TCA is thrilled to congratulate our member, FinClear, for being granted historic new licences by ASIC and the Reserve Bank of Australia. These approvals make FinClear's FCX the first and only fully licensed alternative to ASX Clear and CHESS in Australia, marking a pivotal moment in Australian financial infrastructure. This incredible achievement positions FinClear to challenge the ASX’s long-standing monopoly on clearing and settlement services, paving the way for greater competition and innovation. By leveraging blockchain technology for private company share trading, FinClear is set to revolutionise the market with instant settlement capabilities. We are proud to champion FinClear as it leads Australia into a new era of financial market infrastructure, ensuring a more competitive and dynamic financial ecosystem.
