Please see below a media release issued today by the Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, regarding Tasracing’s Code of Practice for racehorse welfare: Code of Practice for racehorse welfare announced Tasmania is set to become one of only a select number of Australian racing jurisdictions with a comprehensive Code of Practice for racehorses. Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said animal welfare in the Tasmanian racing industry is of critical importance to the Tasmanian Government. “The enforceable Code of Practice has been developed after extensive consultation with industry participants and stakeholders,” Minister Howlett said. “The Code covers key aspects of the care, welfare and health of racehorses kept in Tasmania, and applies to all people with responsibility for the care and management of registered racehorses. “It not only provides guidance to racing industry participants but also an assurance to the broader Tasmanian community of the critical role animal welfare oversight plays in the industry.” The new Code of Practice contains standards that are enforceable under the rules of racing, as well as guidelines based on industry best practice. “It provides whole-of-lifecycle welfare coverage from breeding to retirement and the rehoming of racehorses,” Minister Howlett said. “Racehorse ownership is a long-term responsibility and owners must make provisions for the horse’s eventual retirement from racing. “Most horses will be suitable for a second career in a competitive discipline (dressage, show jumping, eventing, showing, endurance or carriage driving) following a period of re-training, while others will make good therapy horses or paddock companions.” The establishment of an Equine Code of Practice is part of the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future. The Code covers both thoroughbred and standardbred horses. You can read the full Code of Practice for Racehorse Welfare at the link below: https://bit.ly/3AvirI2

The Tasracing Annual Report was tabled in the Parliament of Tasmania on Wednesday 16 October 2024. The past five years of operations have seen substantial improvements across all aspects of the Tasmanian racing industry. The Tasmanian racing industry’s economic contribution to the state is continuing to grow. It is important to recognise the role the industry plays in the state’s economy in terms of spending and employment. It is equally important to recognise the role the industry plays in developing and preserving social and community benefits in the state. Greyhound Adoption Program foster carer Toni Dale passed a huge milestone recently after she fostered her 100th greyhound at her home through Tasracing’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). Toni started fostering in 2010 and has had a constant stream of learner pets through her home ever since. Apart from the introduced foster rewards and being provided with a bag of dry feed for each dog, Toni has taken no payments for her work. “I just like to know they are going to a good home,” she said. “Some of them have not raced at all, and others have won lots of races, so they are all different.” Foster carers play a very important role in assisting to prepare the greyhound racing industry’s retired racers for life after racing. At the same time, they gather information specific to the dog’s suitability’s which in turn assists GAP to match that dog to the best home. A foster carer takes a dog into their home and teaches them the rules of the home as well as taking them out to expose them to a range of environments. We would like to congratulate Toni on this terrific milestone! 💚
