We’re incredibly humbled to be recognised as Australia’s most trusted utilities brand in the 2024 Roy Morgan Trusted Brand Awards. Stuart Wallace, General Manager of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement and Daniel Peacock, Head of Customer Contact, accepted the award on behalf of Sydney Water. A big thank you to our customers for their support - we wouldn’t be Sydney Water without our customers, who are at the heart of everything we do. We’ve spent the past decade understanding and responding to what our customers really need and value, and being named the most trusted utility brand in Australia is a great honour and testament to the hard work and dedication of every one of our team.

We’re trialling a noise control barrier as hoarding around our work site for the Kemps Creek Pressure Mains Project (KCPM) that reduces construction noise by around 80%. The noise control barrier consists of 23kg stackable panels made from recycled materials and is fully recyclable itself. A sustainable and effective solution, the barrier is 23% more efficient than standard noise blankets. The noise barrier is provided by Control Hire, a connection we formed through Quickway, our delivery contractor for this project, at our 2024 Infrastructure Pipeline and Supply Chain Expo earlier this year. The KCPM project will improve wastewater services in the South West Growth Area, one of the NSW State Government’s three designated growth areas in South West Sydney. The KCPM will be the primary source of flow in the commissioning of our Advanced Water Recycling Centre. We recently hosted 50 members from the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA) at our Purified Recycled Water (PRW) Discovery Centre in Quakers Hill. As part of the visit, attendees toured the Quakers Hill Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) followed by the Discovery Centre. This provided an opportunity to see the full journey of how we can treat wastewater to create purified recycled water, and how it could help to secure Greater Sydney’s water supply in the future. We asked some of the attendees about what they think of PRW as a water supply option, and how important collaboration is across the water industry. #purifiedrecycledwater #waterindustry #watersupply #sydney #sydneywater

Last week we welcomed over 1,200 primary school students to attend one of the biggest youth sustainability events in NSW! We were thrilled to host the Youth Eco Summit (YES) at Newington Armory in Sydney Olympic Park, which brought together our future generation of leaders and change makers to experience sustainability in action. Sydney Water ambassador Shane Jacobson facilitated the event and explored the role of water in sustainability with the students.   Over 30 providers including Sydney Zoo, GWS Giants, the Australian Museum, Koori Kinnections and teams across Sydney Water, hosted fun, interactive displays and ran hands-on workshops to learn from the best of the best in sustainability. Congratulations to our Community Education team and all the volunteers who helped to deliver an amazing event 👏 #youthecosummit #sustainability #education #environment #sydney #sydneywater

Last Friday we hosted our annual Pink Day to raise awareness of breast cancer and vital funding for McGrath Breast Care Nurses. Special guests included Shane Jacobson, Sydney Water Ambassador and host of the event and Glenn McGrath AM, former international cricket player and Director of the McGrath Foundation. A big thank you to all our staff who helped run the day and make the event a roaring success, as well as all those who took to the field to help raise awareness. Sydney Water has proudly supported the McGrath Foundation since 2023, including funding a Breast Care Nurse. Funding helps the McGrath Foundation provide more nurses, and to assist with ongoing professional development training for nurses to keep up to date with the latest treatment programs. #mcgrathfoundation #pinktober #breastcancerawareness #sydneywater

#FlashbackFriday: It's been hidden - but not forgotten - beneath Balmain for almost 60 years! For half a century, it quenched the thirst of the inner west of Sydney. But for the last (almost) 60 years, the heritage-listed Balmain Reservoir has laid dormant, seven metres beneath the grass of Gladstone Park. Measuring 1700 square metres (that’s the same as three and a half basketball courts!), in its heyday, the reservoir was able to hold 11 million litres of drinking water. Completed in 1915, it was the last of eight underground bunkers built to store drinking water for a growing Sydney. But as new methods of delivering water evolved, the need for the Balmain Reservoir to be online receded, and in 1965, the last valve was twisted shut, the doors to the pump house locked, and the reservoir decommissioned. While the Balmain Reservoir is decommissioned, other underground reservoirs such as Crown Street in the city, and the twin ponds of Centennial Park, still supply inner Sydney with drinking water - more than a century and a half after their construction. #heritage #oldsydney #flashback #balmain #innerwestsydney #sydney #sydneywater

A growing population and increasingly challenging weather cycles are putting pressure on Sydney’s drinking water supplies. But a solution could be right under our feet. Purified recycled water (or PRW) is a safe method of re-treating and re-using water. PRW is highly treated wastewater recycled from industry and homes (including kitchens, showers and toilets) to remove any impurities. PRW has been consumed safely by people for more than 50 years in over 35 cities, from California to Perth. With the help of our PRW Discovery Centre at Quakers Hill, we’re seeking to demonstrate to the community that the technology to treat recycled water to drinking water quality is available - and most importantly, that it’s safe and reliable. Did you know... we recently replaced a critical valve that helps supply water to half-a-million people, without any impact to customers? Our Major Projects, Engineering Services and Western Network Operations teams recently collaborated to complete a successful replacement of a critical valve in our Prospect South water system. Through meticulous planning and collaboration, these teams avoided impacts to 500,000 customers! 💧 The scope of the work was to replace a broken butterfly valve on the suction pipeline to three water pumping stations. The water was isolated to the three pumping stations at Prospect for 21 hours. Ensuring the downstream reservoirs were filled prior to the shutdown, the 500,000 customers connected to this network didn’t notice any difference to their water supply or pressure whilst the work was undertaken. With the new valves in place, the resilience and reliability of the supply mains for the Prospect South water delivery system are now improved significantly 👍 📷 1: Disinfecting new butterfly valve prior to installation 📷 2: Tightening up bolts on new valve installation 📷 3: Old butterfly valve from 1978 after removal

Did you know… our Wollongong Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) recycles ♻️ around 53 million litres of water every day – that’s enough to fill more than 21 Olympic-sized swimming pools!💧 It’s our largest facility in the Illawarra region and services a population of about 200,000 from Bellambi, Cringila, Dapto, Keiraville, Port Kembla, Unanderra, Windang, Wollongong and Wombarra. The facility was constructed in 1958 as a primary treatment plant and has undergone several improvements and augmentations since. Today, our high-quality recycled water is used in a number of ways throughout the local community: 💧BlueScope Steel uses about 20 million litres of this recycled water every day to make iron and steel, cool the plant and equipment and reduce dust. 💧Port Kembla Coal Terminal uses about 450 million litres of our recycled water each year, reducing the use of fresh water by over 70%. 💧Wollongong City Council uses it to water grass and gardens at local sports fields 💧Wollongong Golf Club uses it to water its greens. We also re-use some water on-site for industrial purposes like washing down equipment and filter backwashes. The remaining treated disinfected wastewater is discharged to the South Pacific Ocean via the deep water outfall with diffuser zone. Wollongong WRRF is just one of our 30 water recycling and wastewater treatment plants in Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra. #wollongong #illawarra #waterrecycling #circulareconomy #sustainability #sydneywater
