Thank you, Community Housing Industry Association, for a jam-packed two-day program exploring Affordable Housing Development and Investment. We were thrilled to have our CEO, Jennifer Michelmore, invited to facilitate a panel that explored ideas for winning community support for social and affordable housing developments. Patrick Fensham, PIA Victoria divisional president, discussed the critical importance of quality neighbourhood planning, that social and affordable housing must be viewed as critical infrastructure, and that CHPs must be consulted as key stakeholders in the planning processes. Jonathan O'Brien, Lead Organisation of YIMBY Melbourne, discussed the limitations of our current planning process being focused on an 'objections culture' and shared the work his organisation is doing to elevate the 'yes' voice in the planning processes. Jo Cannington, Director of Homes Melbourne, shared an overview of the City of Melbourne's People Panel on Affordable Housing, where a demographically representative group of 40 residents developed 11 recommendations for how the city could improve affordable housing delivery. Our three big takeaways: We need to find a way to amplify the voice of the silent majority. Education is vital - we need to help communities understand the size and scale of the housing affordability challenge and build their knowledge on the types of solutions that work. CHPs are critical stakeholders that need to be at the table in neighbourhood planning discussions.

Many residents in rapidly growing areas face a big urban change hurdle. They don’t know their communities are growing. Our research has also found many residents have a limited understanding of the need for urban consolidation, have had minimal participation in urban change discussions, and don’t trust the urban development system. Find out how we are building the readiness of communities to navigate change:  https://lnkd.in/gDQ7vdu6

The South East Queensland Regional Plan 2023 update is live and sets an important ambition for most of our required 900,000 new homes to be added into established neighbourhoods, with a particular focus on increased densities in high amenities areas.  These needed changes will ensure future residents can live close to jobs, services and public transport and will also change the look, feel and experience of our neighbourhoods. These changes will bring a mix of emotions from our communities, ranging from anger to excitement, and we need practitioners and elected members to have the tools they need to help communities understand why these changes are important and how they can be involved in the change process.  We’ve been developing videos like the one below for this exact purpose and would be keen to hear your feedback.  Read more about the SEQ plan at www.qld.gov.au/ShapingSEQ Share your thoughts on our video in the comments or learn more about our work at wearethi.org

For community members to contribute effectively to urban change, they need to have a grasp of key themes/concepts like urban consolidation and densification, sustainability, and infrastructure planning. We are producing videos like the one below to enable councils to help their communities learn about some of these concepts. Each is tailored to a specific LGA’s growth numbers and change priorities.
