  • Flexible resourcing company publishes report stating that 99% of in-house legal teams lack necessary staffing and 93% of those surveyed think that flexible legal talent can be an effective solution. Mindblowing. Despite another of their surveys suggesting that legal budgets are increasing, you can bet that there will be an 'in-house legal teams are expected to do more with less" article within a matter of weeks. https://lnkd.in/eGBm2cvx

Some lawyers I speak to would only ever consider doing a secondment as a last resort if they couldn't find a permanent role. For others, it's a very deliberate career choice. Here are just a few reasons why a secondment might be the right move for you. 1. Breaking into a new area or industry Companies have different considerations when hiring secondees and permanent staff. Whilst experience requirements may rule you out of contention for a permanent role, companies bringing in secondees are usually looking to bring someone in as soon as possible and will often be more flexible when it comes to previous experience. If you want to get into a new area, a secondment may be the best way to break in. 2. Seeing what's out there You might be interested in lots of different industry sectors and types of work. Secondments are great for variety and seeing what good looks like in different organisations. That experience can be extremely valuable wherever you end up. 3. Flexibility Secondments are great for flexibility. Whether you need it for family commitments or pursuing other passions, finding a working arrangement that fits in with your life is a key reason why people look at secondment work. 4. Permanent opportunities Finding great lawyers is hard. Really f*cking hard. Finding great lawyers that are the right cultural fit for an organisation is even harder. So when a company finds a lawyer they like and who knows how a company operates, they move heaven and earth to keep them. Plenty of secondments turn into permanent roles, including General Counsel positions. Of course, running a secondments business, I would say all of that, wouldn't I? But a lot of people rule out secondments without understanding the benefits of that way of working. If you're interested in joining the St. Leger Brockman secondments team, send your CV to [email protected]. We provide flexible resourcing solutions to a wide range of high profile businesses, from international airports to listed medical device manufacturers. The one thing all our clients have in common? Great people. No d*ckheads is a non-negotiable. #lawyers #inhousecounsel #secondments

If it gets a video, you know it’s an awesome role! Delighted to be working with my former colleagues in the in-house team at ResMed to recruit a new senior lawyer. I spent over two years working closely with the legal, tax counsel, and legal operations teams and really can’t speak highly enough of the people there and the culture of the business as a whole. I’ll be posting the job this afternoon so start polishing up those resumes. You’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out on this one. #legalrecruitment #inhousecounsel #lawjobs

  • ‘How’s everything going at work?’ ‘Oh, really great. I always hated socialising and seeing daylight so it’s perfect for me.’ Find yourself spouting BS about how great your job is when your friends and family ask? It might be time we had a chat. #legalrecruitment #lawyers #lawjobs

I saw a law firm recruitment video the other day with various junior lawyers saying what an amazing firm it was and talking about the incredible opportunities they’d had. ‘Who better to tell you about being a grad at X than our current grads?’ Hmmm… #lawyers #legalrecruitment #lawfirms

Companies recruiting lawyers need to understand that just because someone works at a top tier law firm does not mean they’re a top tier lawyer. Mediocrity can survive for a long time in large offices. Mid tiers and small law firms are loaded with people that are just as able as their top tier counterparts, and are often working on the other side of the same matters. In the more junior ranks, lawyers at smaller firms are often taking a more active role on matters than their peers at the national and international firms, with far greater levels of client engagement. If you’re only going to consider lawyers that have worked at one of five or six law firms then you’re going to miss out on a lot of talented people. #lawyers #inhouselawyers #legalprofession

  • The AICD Essential Director Update in Brisbane this morning was excellent, especially the discussions around the business risks created by a poor culture. Another tool for identifying poor culture which didn’t make the slide below is the number of awards a company has suggesting that it’s a great place to work. Lots of places listed as Employers of Choice sound like bloody awful places to work and provide a steady stream of candidates for us. #aicd #companydirectors #corporateculture

I always spend a little extra time on the resumes of people who graduated around the same time as me (2008- grrrrreat year for job hunting in the UK) and contemplate what might have been if I’d stuck with a traditional legal career path. I caught up with a fellow class of 2008 lawyer the other day who has a gold-plated resume. Trained at a top tier firm and did a couple of secondments with high profile clients, moved to a very highly-regarded boutique in a more senior role and built up their management experience, and then started their in-house career. They’ve progressed through the ranks in-house, working with two businesses that 90% of the world has heard of, and they’re now perfectly placed to make the step up to a GC role. But they’ve got two kids under three, still get woken up several times a night, and being a present parent is more important than any legal role will ever be. Experience-wise, they’re absolutely ready to make a move up the ladder. But when they factor in everything else, the flexibility that they have at the moment is more important. Taking on a position that’s going to be all-consuming when you’re running on fumes probably isn’t going to end well. Timing is everything. #lawyers #generalcounsel #inhouselawyers
