CIRCULARITY IN ACTION! 🌎 Share this video if you hope to see future events prioritise circularity like this! Going Green Media went behind the scenes with Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 Circular Economy team to see just where the raw materials that we so often don’t think about, like carpeting, banners, and show pieces, go after the Games are over, as well as learn more about the impact these common sense and intentional efforts are having on the country, its people, and the planet. Special thanks to Georgina Grenon, Caroline Louis, Guilhelm Das, Ewa Magiera, and the entire International Olympic Committee – IOC team for guiding and supporting us as we sought to highlight this small portion of the monumental work you have done, and all that you and your circularity goals have achieved! Wow! How time flies. Reflecting on #SEASummit24, it's hard to believe that over six months have passed since we gathered at Marvel Stadium to ignite change, inspire collaboration, and explore diverse paths to sustainability in sport. On 17 April 2024, Sports Environment Alliance annual SEA Summit brought together a vibrant mix of the sporting community—from national and state sporting bodies to local clubs, venue managers, and passionate advocates. The theme, The Future of Sport: Taking action today for tomorrow, united attendees from across the sector, each eager to share, learn, and take meaningful steps forward. Together, we explored how sustainable practices can build a lasting legacy, benefiting athletes, fans, and the wider community. 🗓️ Importantly it's time to start planning for #SEASummit25 where we will be back at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Wednesday 14 May 2025. Keep an eye out for further updates coming soon. Check out the full #SEASummit24 report below for insights and key takeaways that can guide us all in our journeys ahead. https://lnkd.in/gMcqDdtb #Sea_thechange #NoplanetNoplay

Waste Expo Australia 2024 is happening this week in Melbourne, bringing together over 100 leading industry waste leaders, government and expert speakers to discuss and explore the latest innovations and strategies shaping the future of waste management and resource recovery in Australia. While the expo isn't sport-specific, there is a significant connection. As generators of waste, sporting clubs and organisations have a unique opportunity to advance improved waste management and sustainability practices and make a positive difference to the environment and community. By integrating waste reduction, recycling innovation and circular economy strategies into their operations, they can influence our sporting communities to take actions that provide for a sustainable and regenerative future. Waste Expo Australia will be co-located with All Energy Australia at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, forming the country's premier events on renewable energy, energy management, waste management, resource recovery and sustainability. Sports Environment Alliance Membership and Programs Manager, Zandy Powell is attending to network and hear the latest on material usage, recovery processes, sustainability, sustainable procurement and circular economy approaches. https://lnkd.in/g269A2Y #SustainabilityInSport #SportsForThePlanet #SustainablePractices #SportsEnvironmentAlliance #sportingevents #sustainablesport #SEA_theChange #noplanetnoplay

FISU Oceania recently released their "Our Green Path to 2030". As a signatory of Sports for Climate Action and a member of Sports Environment Alliance , they are proud to be a part of a global sports community that is working to make a difference. FISU Oceania President David Schmude said, “Whilst our Federation is small we believe we can make a difference and contribute to reducing global carbon emission targets that have been ambitiously set by nations across the world." "The supporting action plan within our strategy identifies practical actions with tangible measures and timelines. We are looking forward to annually reporting on our progress and engaging with our members and communities to make a difference." The action plan includes, but is not limited to: - They will invest in blue carbon projects that align with UN SDGs and which operate in their region. -They will improve their internal practices to reduce their footprint. -They will assist their members by providing support and education so they too can reduce their carbon footprint. - They will actively advocate for climate action through their social media channels with targeted campaigns that educate and encourage thier followers to take action at the local level. Last week Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) hosted the sixth and final webinar in its #BeyondtheSummit Webinar Series, with this one focused on 'Designing and implementing sustainability into sporting events' During the webinar, we heard from: • Andrew Sweet, Chief Business Officer, South Australia Cricket Association (SACA) - Andrew shared insights into SACA's approach to integrating sustainable initiatives into cricket events. Key focus areas include developing a sustainability roadmap that addresses energy use, waste management, travel, and working with suppliers. Andrew also emphasised the importance of collaboration and learning from others in the industry. • Anthony McIntosh, CEO of Little Athletics Victoria (LAVic), shared insights into how they are integrating sustainability into their operations. LAVic, which hosts events for 18,000 athletes and 15,000 families primarily in the Melbourne metropolitan area, is taking proactive steps to reduce its environmental impact. Initiatives include encouraging the use of refillable water bottles, promoting carpooling and public transport, and working with local vendors to minimise food miles. • Brett Saxon, Event Organiser & Race Director, Trailsplus on their 'LEAVE NO TRACE, just footprints' approach to staging events. Since 2009, Trailsplus has hosted over 125 trail running events with a commitment to reducing their environmental impact. Key sustainability initiatives include eliminating single-use plastic by replacing plastic ribbon markers with reusable signs and ribbons, discontinuing plastic and paper cups in favour of collapsible silicone cups, and recycling timing chips. World Athletics was named Elite Organisation of the Year at the BBC Green Sport Awards in London recently, in recognition of its ambitious initiatives to encourage and demonstrate action on environmental and climate change issues over the past year. World Athletics was credited for several initiatives, including the implementation of its Athletics for a Better World Standard, a system that evaluates an event's environmental, social and local economic impacts and benefits that has been incorporated into the event bidding and licencing process. Speaking on the impact of the Athletics for a Better World Standard, which now requires events to consider environmental and social impacts in their planning and delivery, World Athletics President Seb Coe said: “Inclusion of sustainability metrics into our bidding criteria helps as a catalyst for change. In order to successfully bid for our events, it might actually demand greater focus on an event's environmental impact." Collaboration, Coe said, is also a core component of the Standard. "Let us use sport as an amplifying voice. I will go to my grave fundamentally believing that sport is a key vehicle for change. It doesn't always happen quickly. It doesn't happen overnight. But I've rarely seen a sport go into any political, cultural or national environment that hasn't actually flicked the dial socially or politically." Through its Green Sport Awards, BBC Sport aims to celebrate the good news - the athletes, former athletes and organisations working hard to enact and inspire change. The other nominees for ‘Elite Organisation of the Year’ include the motorsport series Extreme E, organisers of the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) and World Rugby.
