After months of research and deep-diving into our archives, we are thrilled to announce the opening of our new, in-house Library of Alexandria exhibition. The exhibition explores the library's profound social impact through personal stories and highlights its role in fostering knowledge, curiosity, and community. In 1989, Snøhetta —a young and unknown practice —won the international competition to revive the ancient Library of Alexandria in Egypt, reimagining the library for the modern era. The establishment of the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina in 2002 marked a renaissance of this ancient tradition, symbolizing a commitment to knowledge, education, and cultural exchange. The project became fundamental for Snøhetta's social impact philosophy and further practice development. It also symbolizes global collaboration, with contributions from countless individuals and organizations shaping its legacy. This exhibition, "People and The Library of Alexandria", is the first to be shown at the newly opened Archive Gallery, an extension of Snøhetta's studio in Oslo. It explores the living legacy of Bibliotheca Alexandrina, focusing on how the library's design, usage, and social impact are fundamentally rooted in human interaction and experience. The exhibition will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10:00 and 14:00 and by appointment at Snøhetta's Archive Gallery, Skur 39, Akershusstranda 21, Oslo. Architecture and Planning
International integrated architecture, landscape, interior architecture, art, product, graphic and digital design firm.
About us
Snøhetta is an international integrated architecture and design firm. The practice has a global presence, with offices spanning from Oslo, Paris, and Innsbruck, to New York, San Francisco. Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Adelaide and Melbourne. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original transdisciplinary approach, and integrates architectural, landscape, interior, product, graphic, digital design and art across its projects. The collaborative nature between Snøhetta's different disciplines is an essential driving force of the practice. Snøhetta is currently working on a wide range of international projects, including the Ordrupgaard Art Museum expansion in Denmark and the Shanghai Grand Opera House. Recently completed works include Le Monde Group Headquarters in Paris, Europe’s first underwater restaurant, Under, the redesign of the public space in Times Square, the expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lascaux IV: The International Centre for Cave Art, Powerhouse Brattørkaia and the design for Norway’s new banknotes. Snøhetta’s working method practices a simultaneous exploration of traditional handicraft and cutting-edge digital technology. At the heart of all Snøhetta’s work lies a commitment to social and environmental sustainability, shaping the built environment and design in the service of humanism. Snøhetta believes well-conceived design can help things run more efficiently, improve people’s well-being and make life more enjoyable. Every project is designed with strong, meaningful concepts in mind – concepts that can translate the ethos of its users and their context.

Our new building at the Joslyn Art Museum floats atop two granite garden walls with a transparent first floor enclosing a new atrium lobby, Museum store, and a multi-functional community space. These ground floor spaces gradually rise to the level of the existing buildings through a gently sloping, accessible walkway. The weightless effect of the hovering expansion recalls the striking cloud formations that blanket the Great Plains as well as the deep overhangs and horizontal expression of regional Prairie Style architecture. Today, the Joslyn Art Museum opens! Created in partnership with local architects Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, the 42,000-square-foot addition adds light-filled galleries that are designed to meet the demands and explore the possibilities of a growing permanent collection. In addition to the new extension, our team has designed more than three acres of rejuvenated public gardens and outdoor spaces on the site. The project renews Joslyn's status as Omaha's premier cultural hub for the visual arts by reorienting the Museum grounds around a reimagined public arrival anchored by welcoming community spaces and dynamic galleries. The design of the Museo de Ciencias Ambientales, located in Guadalajara, Mexico, integrates the physical and social conditions that frame the project. Large open air courtyards and gardens carve out space in the museum encouraging natural light and ventilation. Inspired by the confluence of cultural and natural forces that have created the rich landforms of the region, the design displays the connections and interdependencies within the urban-rural divide. The Snøhetta designed Path of Perspectives is a great destination for a summer trip. Photographer Thomas Steinlechner thought so too. He hiked Innsbruck´s spectacular Nordkette mountain range and came back with some new impressions that we are happy to share with you. The “Perspektivenweg” introduces a series of ten architectural elements along a panorama trail in the breathtaking alpine landscape and highlights the unique features of the mountain scenery. It´s not only a great place for nature lovers, but also invites visitors to take a moment and reflect. Quotes from the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein are inscribed on the subtlety designed architectural features giving a dual meaning to the path of perspectives. Located in Kautokeino, on the plains of Finnmark in Norway, Čoarvemátta opens its doors to the public. The building houses the Sámi National Theater Beaivváš, and the Sámi High School and Reindeer Herding School – important cultural institutions of The Sámi settlement area of Sápmi. Deriving from the Sámi words “čoarvi” and “mátta”, meaning “horn” and “root”, Čoarvemátta takes its name and shape from the strongest part of the reindeer antler. Wanting the building to be as close to nature as possible, natural materials such as wood and stone are used. The building follows the shapes of the terrain, with the roof pulling down towards the ground to meet the landscape. The elongated, continuous shape draws associations to carvings in a subject, such as a tool made of reindeer horns. A total of six new works have been created for the building. The artwork Sáráhkká, Juoksáhkká ja Uksáhkká (2024) is made by Rámavuol Elle Bigge, in collaboration with Merethe Kuhumunen. Snøhetta developed this project together with the architectural firm 70°N arkitektur, the entrepreneur Econor, and the artist Joar Nango. The Snøhetta designed temporary installation «Urban Blooms» in Innsbruck's old town helps to raise awareness of public space and the importance of non-commercial areas in the city. The pop-up urban oasis developed in collaboration with Innsbruck Tourism, will stay another few weeks in Kiebachgasse. Colourful timber modules such as planters with large bushes for shading, a lawn platform for relaxation, and seating blocks can be combined in many different ways, encouraging informal public use and creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Before these elements will be moved to a different location in Innsbruck we want to share some impressions of the community project transforming the street. Volunteers, locals, and Snøhetta team members came together to paint the street, creating vibrant patterns that include game areas like chess, tic-tac-toe, and a jumping game for children. This addition brings a playful and engaging element to the space.
