This Sunday will mark the start of NAIDOC Week (7-14 July). Celebrations are being organised across the country to acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. An Ecumenical prayer service is taking place at Christ Church Cathedral from 1.45pm. The service will include traditional dancers from Manning Valley Anglican College, while prayers and songs will be focused on Aboriginal themes. Meet Kayla, one of the inspirational young people we’re proud to support at Samaritans Student Accommodation. Kayla became homeless when she was 15 years old and came to live in a safe environment at our accommodation in Wickham. She is now studying social work at university and working casually at a Samaritans refuge. Samaritans can only provide this essential service with the support of our generous community. Meet Tate, one of the inspirational young people we’re proud to support at Samaritans Student Accommodation. Tate felt unsafe at home after their parents refused to accept their sexuality. Today is World Environment Day. It's the United Nations flagship day for encouraging global awareness and action to protect the environment. This year's World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” Newcastle Anglican takes seriously its role in protecting and caring for Earth, our planet and home. Many diocesan entities have adopted policies and practices to reduce harm, waste or pollution. This includes fossil fuel investment divestment, eliminating disposable cups at morning tea, and joining local environment groups in bush care, land care, community gardens and op shops to combat fast fashion. We recognised National Reconciliation Week with a morning tea at Booragul on Tuesday. Guest speaker Aunty Jill Jessop, a Wailwan woman from Central Western NSW, was joined by our Director of Reconciliation Aunty Di Langham, a proud Boandik woman from South Australia. This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week (20-26 May) was ‘Now More Than Ever’. It’s a reminder to all of us that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will, and must, continue. Aunty Jill spoke about the importance of the week and highlighted the work of a Lake Macquarie group that is painting beautiful gum leaves to help families mourn the unexpected or unexplained death of someone close. The Nikinpa Art Group, made up of First Nations women, gather to paint, share stories and food, and support each other.
