Safe and Equal is the peak body for Victorian organisations specialising in family and gender-based violence.

About us

Safe and Equal is the peak body for Victorian organisations that specialise in family and gender-based violence across the continuum, including primary prevention, early intervention, response and recovery. Our vision is a world where everyone is safe, respected and thriving, living free from family and gender-based violence. As a peak, we work with and for our members to prevent and respond to violence, building a better future for adults, children and young people experiencing, at risk of, or recovering from family and gender-based violence. ➕ We aren’t a direct service organisation, so we can’t provide support to people experiencing family violence. If you are in immediate danger, please contact the police on triple zero (000). For family violence counselling, support and referrals in Australia, please contact 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732. There are specialist family violence services available across Victoria to help people experiencing family violence and their family and friends. Please visit areyousafeathome.org.au for more support providers. ➕ Safe and Equal is based on Wurundjeri Country. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional and ongoing custodians of the lands on which we live and work, and we pay respects to Elders past and present. We acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded and recognise First Nations peoples’ rights to self-determination and continuing connections to land, waters and community. ➕ We recognise, welcome and respect people of all genders, sexes and sexualities. Safe and Equal is committed to improving access and inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people. We are a Rainbow Tick accredited organisation. We are committed to ongoing improvement in being a safe and inclusive service within LGBTIQA+ communities.

Check out our latest resource 'Engaging Men from Multicultural and Faith-Based Communities in Primary Prevention': https://lnkd.in/gS96e4mP For gender equality and violence prevention activities to be effective, they need to engage everyone, this includes men and boys from multicultural and faith-based communities. By addressing barriers to engagement, highlighting the benefits of prevention activities, and consulting with communities to build trust and capacity, prevention practitioners can support men from multicultural and faith-based communities to meaningfully participate in primary prevention. This resource was developed by the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health and Safe and Equal. Our new resource brings together lessons from members of the Connecting Communities network and existing evidence about engaging men from multicultural and faith-based communities in primary prevention initiatives. #PrimaryPrevention #FamilyViolence #Multicultural #PublicHealth

A message from Djirra CEO Antoinette Braybrook AM: One year ago today, the Voice to Parliament referendum delivered a message loud and clear. 6.2 million people across this country stood with us in the YES. This was a powerful moment for our people, and one we KNOW will lead to change. While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, Djirra is not deterred. Djirra REMAINS in the YES because Aboriginal women and their children deserve better. We remain loud, proud and unapologetic in our fight for a self-determined future where Aboriginal women and their children are safe, heard and thriving in culture and identity. For 65,000 years, our people have been the world’s most resilient culture. We have stayed the distance since invasion, and we will not STOP. WE are committed to the principles of the Uluru Statement - Voice, Treaty, Truth. Djirra invites you, our supporters, to stand and walk with us to bring the change that all the people in our country so deserve. We INVITE YOU to listen to Aboriginal women, amplify our voices, share our calls. And we INVITE YOU TO BE A PART OF DJIRRA’S STORY now and into the future. You can do this by making a donation via https://lnkd.in/gmARCDZ to support Aboriginal women’s SELF DETERMINATION. We INVITE YOU to join us and back in our calls for government investment in supporting us to realise our vision for Victoria’s first Aboriginal Women’s Centre. Walk with Djirra in the YES. Aboriginal women and their children deserve better. #VoiceTruthTreaty #AboriginalWomensLivesMatter #YES #UluruStatement

Djirra CEO Antoinette Braybrook AM calls for an urgent investment in Aboriginal specialist family violence organisations’ systems for collecting, recording and reporting data so that there is a more accurate and complete picture of Aboriginal women’s needs and experiences. Relying on ‘official’ statistics distorts reality and too often makes Aboriginal women invisible. "Investing in First Nations data sovereignty is key to keeping Aboriginal women visible and it is not negotiable when it comes to our self determination” Antoinette Braybrook AM. Read Djirra’s full update on the release of the Australian Institute of Criminology research into homicides of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women here: https://lnkd.in/ghzPJaHy
