The latest weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan Inflation Expectations are 4.8% for the week of August 19-25, 2024. This figure is below the average so far this year of 5.0%, and down 0.3% points from the month of July. A look at monthly Inflation Expectations for July 2024 shows the measure at 5.1% for the month – up 0.2% points from a month earlier and the highest monthly figure since April 2024 (5.2%). The share of mortgage holders ‘At Risk’ of ‘mortgage stress’ fell in July after the Stage 3 tax cuts New research from Roy Morgan shows there are now 1,604,000 mortgage holders (29.8%) ‘At Risk’ of ‘mortgage stress’ in the three months to July 2024. This represents a decrease of 0.5% points on the June figures after the introduction of the Stage 3 tax cuts in July increased household income for millions of Australians – including many mortgage holders. Federal voting intention: Coalition (50.5%) marginally ahead of the ALP (49.5%), but ‘too close to call’ This a reverse of last week’s results but nevertheless the ALP or Coalition would require the support of minor parties and independents to form a minority government. Readership of magazines is up from a year ago with over 11.5 million Australians now reading print magazines Better Homes and Gardens, The Australian Women’s Weekly and National Geographic are Australia’s most widely read paid magazines – all with readership of over 1 million Australians. Australians to spend less on Father’s Day amidst cost-of-living crunch This Father’s Day, Australians will spend $820 million on their dads, with alcohol and food (34%), clothing, shoes, and sleepwear (15%) and books, games, and music (15%) the top three gift categories of choice. More than 8 million shoppers nationwide are planning to buy gifts for the dads in their life, spending around $101 each compared to last year’s $112 spend (down 10%). While retailers welcome the seasonal boost, overall Australians are spending less than last year’s figure of $850 million – a dip of $30 million or 3.5%. News publishing deeply engrained in Australians’ lives with 21.7m readers and nine in ten engaged by up to four different titles every month The latest Roy Morgan data shows: • Total News Publishing readership has grown to an incredible 21.7m Australians aged 14+ each month. • News consumers are engaging broadly and deeply with 64% reading three or more content categories each month and nine in ten accessing up to four different titles. • Despite a cost-of-living crisis, less than 1% of news readers stopped paying for access in the last quarter highlighting the resilient and habitual relationship readers have with news. • Total News Publishing audiences are valuable for advertisers, with high-net-worth Australians 28% more likely to read the news and paying news readers 25% more likely to be big spenders. ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence dropped 0.9pts to 83.0 this week. Consumer Confidence has now spent a record 81 straight weeks below the mark of 85. Consumer Confidence is a now 7.2 points above the same week a year ago, August 14-20, 2023 (75.8), and is now 2.1 points above the 2024 weekly average of 81.9. A look at Consumer Confidence by State shows the index decreasing in most States including New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia, but up slightly in Queensland. The driver of this week’s decrease was a fall in confidence about buying conditions – falling to its lowest for over a month.
