Today the Victorian Government released new draft laws that will, if implemented, improve energy efficiency standards for renters. They include ensuring that rental home have energy efficient electric heating and cooling, and hot water, and require ceiling insulation and draught sealing to keep homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The proposals will support renters to get off gas, although we think that switching out gas cooktops is also required to make this a reality. Consultation closes July 1st: https://lnkd.in/gucehPVG Find out more about our initial response here: https://lnkd.in/gUwSRH-b

Too many renters are living in conditions that put lives at risk - with cold homes a key factor in 1 in 17 Australian deaths each year. The situation is worse than in Sweden!* Let’s do something about it. As a national sustainability not-for-profit, Renew has had success advocating to improve energy efficiency. Please consider donating to Renew by 30 June to help to fund vital research, quality independent advice, policy analysis, and active advocacy on behalf of energy consumers. This also includes Renew’s efforts to advocate for: - New standards so that all rental homes include ceiling insulation and efficient heating and cooling; - Laws that mean people selling and renting homes provide an energy efficiency rating; - Low-income retrofit and electrification programs. Sanctuary 67 is out now! Our small projects special celebrates smaller footprint new builds, clever urban infill, modest-scope renovations and more. In Fremantle, an old stables building was saved and converted into a comfortable, 9.2-Star two-bedroom home for just $250,000. A 35-square-metre Brisbane apartment gets a mini makeover for a greater sense of spaciousness and light. Compact new builds in Melbourne and Hobart backyards offer housing flexibility, and a targeted renovation in country NSW saw one huge, dated bathroom turned into a neat new bathroom and an ensuite in the same footprint. Building smaller is a key element of sustainability, and in our feature article our favourite experts share their top design tips on how to achieve a great, comfortable home without going large. Elsewhere, we take a look at the why, how and where of building a secondary dwelling, and how the regulations differ around the country. Architect Steele Olney shares the story of developing his tiny yet functional prefabricated backyard studio offering. In the first of a four-part series, Dr Fiona Gray introduces the key elements of biophilic design, and we have a chat with Renew CEO, Helen Oakey. Expert gardener Mara Ripani sings the praises of good old-fashioned flowers and offers advice on how to grow them, preserve them and use them – plus much more.
