His presentation "Cultivating critical consciousness - an intersectional, critical race theory lens to cultural safety education in healthcare" was judged the best out of the competition of seven Candidates during the RACMA 2024 Conference. The Challenge is named in honour of psychiatrist and Medical Administrator Dr Margaret Tobin, an exemplar mental health leader, who always had time for teaching, mentoring, support and advice.

RACMA Conference 2024 wrapped up with an entertaining and fervent debate between two teams of RACMA members about whether the future medical administrator will be replaced with AI. The negative team was declared the winner with their convincing argument that while AI will play an increasingly important role, there will always be a need for human oversight in medical administration. #HealthcareInnovation #HealthcareAI #HealthcareTechnology #MedicalTech #RACMA24

Dr Emma Hodge hopes that efforts to improve doctor wellbeing will continue to grow across Australia following her innovative project in regional Queensland. Her project included a baseline survey of burnout and professional fulfillment in a cohort of doctors and has resulted in a range of initiatives to improve doctor wellbeing. These include: - Ability for doctors to submit preferences about whether they wanted to work overtime. - Cultural safety shadowing sessions to improve confidence in dealing with patients of different backgrounds. - An AMC Clinical Exam preparation program. - Greater access to food options on breaks with a food-delivery service for doctors staffed by hospital volunteers. #medicine #medicalleadership #doctor #burnout #RACMA24

Virtual emergency care has evolved rapidly in Queensland over the past five years and is helping to improve access to care for people who don’t live close to a hospital. It is also helping to reduce Emergency Department overcrowding through the elimination of unnecessary presentations. Just 9% of patients seen through virtual consultations end up in Emergency Departments with a focus on low-acuity conditions. Other benefits of virtual emergency care include physician career longevity and potential cost savings. #medicine #medicalleadership #medicalemergency #emergencyresponse #RACMA24

From asthma and cardiovascular diseases to heat-related illness, malnutrition and mental health impacts, Laureate Professor Nick Talley said illness and death related to climate change will only continue to grow unless we all act now. The good news is, we can make a difference. Laureate Professor Talley implored conference attendees to take these positive steps to help Australia reduce its climate impact: -Educate yourself: while more health professional students and practitioners are learning about the health impacts of climate change, most still do not. -Support and encourage research. -Drive building health care resilience: prepare, prevent. Decarbonise: Promote decarbonising at your institution and practice -Voice: Use your voice loudly. You have a duty of care. Eg better health arrives within days after fossil fuel pollution stops. #medicine #medicalleadership #climateandhealth #climate #RACMA24
