Tomorrow is International Overdose Awareness Day and the 2024 theme is “Together we can”. This highlights the strength of coming together and standing in support with: • people who use drugs • friends and family members of lost loved ones • policy and system reform • healthcare and harm reduction workers • advocates who work tirelessly to facilitate change. Overdose is a public health emergency and is preventable. Since 2001, International Overdose Awareness Day has campaigned to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind. “Every life lost to overdose is one too many.” To mark International Overdose Awareness Day (31 August), the Commission co-hosted an event at Brisbane Parliament House alongside QuIVAA and QuIHN. Our acting Chief Executive, Amelia Callaghan, had the opportunity to speak and highlighted three things we can do to end overdose: 👉 Genuinely listen to people with lived-living experience, including carers and family 👉 Follow the evidence, which requires courage to do things differently where needed 👉 Move beyond concepts of individual responsibility to better understanding structural and systemic issues that increase the risk of overdose. We also heard from Minister Shannon Fentiman who spoke about the importance of ensuring harm reduction and overdose prevention initiatives are reaching all Queenslanders. Dr Tim Piatkowski, Griffith University, and Geoffrey Davey, CEO of QuIHN, elaborated on evidence-based actions we can consider to prevent overdose in Queensland, such as supervised consumption rooms.
