The dedicated teams at West Moreton Hospital and Health Service provide exceptional care within prison and youth detention health services. 🫶 West Moreton Health has the largest correctional health service in Queensland, providing health care to six prisons and two youth detention centres. Hear from Holly, one of our passionate registered nurses, and a young person whose life was transformed by the care he received. Holly shares: 'the best part of my job is seeing the young people who've come back as peer supports to talk to their peers because they've changed their lives and really done amazing things. To be a part of that is truly amazing and makes me feel really proud.' Their stories highlight the life-changing work happening in these settings and the lasting impact healthcare staff within the prison and youth detention centres make every day. Meet Sacha, he's the Medical Workforce Services Director with Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service. 👋 Sacha is making sure the medical staff who will work at the new Coomera Hospital – scheduled to be finished late 2027 – have a say in its design. 🏥 'My peers and I are providing input into the design for the doctors' lounge, sleep rooms and the education building,' he said. 'Drawing on lessons from Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina sites, we’re aiming to achieve the best outcomes possible within the funding and space requirements. 'Working with the project team has been great – it’s brilliant to see the architects listen to our concerns and recommendations and then implement those changes into the design for the benefit of all.' His vision for the new Coomera Hospital? 👇 'We’re confident the new Coomera facility will provide a significant boost to health services for the rapidly growing corridor between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, catering to the diverse needs of patients, visitors and staff.' Thanks for all your hard work, Sacha! We can't wait to see what the new Coomera Hospital looks like when it opens. 🌟 📷 Via Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service.

If you've ever wondered where all the medical supplies in a hospital come from, Supply Supervisor Chris can tell you all about it! 👇   'Whenever people ask me what I do, I tell them it’s the handling of the consumables that you see in a hospital room. Right here at the distribution centre we pick and pack all of those items you see such as antibacterial wipes, patient room curtains, sharps storage containers and some surgical supplies,' he said. Based at the North Queensland Distribution Centre (NQDC), Chris has been in the role for 15 years. However, the past 12 months have been busy and full of change for the NQDC crew who recently celebrated one year of operation in their new 5000-square metre facility. 🎂     'It’s nice to be in a new facility that's purpose built and makes our day-to-day work more efficient. It really is just an awesome facility to work in for a humble store man like me,' Chris said.  One of the things Chris loves most about his work is the fact most of the team have worked together for a long time and feel like a big family. ❤️ 'Queensland Health is a good employer and throughout my working career it’s by far been the best place to work.'   Teamwork makes the dream work! Thanks for all you do, Chris and the team. 🙌    The distribution centre is specifically designed to meet the storage and distribution needs of the Queensland Health supply chain. Within the Townsville-based facility's walls are 4000 bulk pallets full of essential supplies for northern Queensland hospital and health services and medical consumable supplies for over 128 Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) stations.    The NQDC was built to future proof Queensland for future pandemics with its increased capacity enabling the storage of additional critical supplies to keep our essential services running and keep our frontline workers, and the community, safe.

It’s inspiring to collaborate with colleagues who not only value each other’s contributions but also uplift one another. Making our work both fulfilling and impactful,’ she said. Kyana is helping break down barriers for patients to attend their appointments to get the expert care they need. 🙌 Kyana is passionate about culturally responsive health care and First Nations health. As a clinical nurse consultant, Kyana coordinates Indigenous Outreach clinics for Metro North that are delivered at Aboriginal Medical Service Centres in collaboration with primary health networks.  'I love connecting with the community, especially Elders. I go out and do a lot of screening and promotion work and get to meet the most interesting and wise community members who are passionate about the best health outcomes for the community,' she said. Kyana is also the program manager of the newly launched a Heart Outreach program for Health Equity (HOPE clinic). This program aims to provide specialist cardiac care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in a culturally comfortable setting closer to home. 🏠 'Our team sees many patients with general and complex cardiac symptoms and conditions who have been reluctant to visit their local hospital for treatment because they don’t feel comfortable,' she said. 'I call patients before they attend the clinic and talk them through why it’s important not to delay getting their heart health checked by our team. 'It makes them feel safe and they like knowing their care is in the hands of people who know and understand them.' Thank you, Kyana for the important work you do. ❤️ Via Metro North Health #Nurse #HealthHero

Lots of people find it difficult to poo in public toilets. But we're here to tell you it's definitely okay to go number 2 at work! 💯 Consistently ignoring your need to poo can lead to stool getting stuck in your colon, haemorrhoids and other serious issues. So, it's better to let it out than hold it in. If you find it extremely difficult to poo around other people, you might have parcopresis. Sometimes called 'poo paranoia', people with this condition have an overwhelming fear of being judged by others because of the sounds or smells associated with pooing. As a result, they may experience symptoms like increased heart rate, sweating or nausea. Here are some tips for a stress-free public toilet poo: 💩 Remember that everyone poops. Visualise someone famous on the toilet (like Taylor Swift). 💩 Bring a small fragranced spray in the toilet with you. 💩 Avoid food or drink that might trigger your bowels. 💩 Breathe deeply or do a short meditation exercise. If stress around pooing in public is affecting you, please reach out to your healthcare provider for support. ℹ️ Sources: Healthline (2021). How to Overcome Anxiety About Pooping in Public

As a peer support worker, Cate helps people find hope in their darkest times. ✨ Cate, who works as part of the Gold Coast Health’s Mental Health Hospital in the Home team, said most consumers she sees are from inpatient wards or community mental health services. 'Currently we have eight virtual beds, and depending on the level of care, the consumers may be seen once or twice a day. We will usually see four in the morning and four in the afternoon, plus phone calls,' she said. 'When consumers come to us, it's an opportunity for them to finish their inpatient stay at home where they are most comfortable.' When asked to reflect on the impact of peer support workers in mental health, Cate said she walked alongside people when they were at their most vulnerable and couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel. 'It's about giving them a sense of hope, knowing there is a future, and that there are opportunities if they want it,' she said. 'There is someone to listen and care and not judge them. It is about holding space and walking alongside. 'I can't do it for them, they have to do it for themselves, so it's about empowering them to have the strength to be able to walk their own path.' Thank you, Cate, for all of the wonderful work you do. ❤️ Via Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service #HealthHero #MentalWellbeing
