Paul is a superstar at Redlands Satellite Hospital. He helps patients get the right care from the right professionals at the right time. ✨   As an emergency physiotherapist, he plays a key role in assessing and treating patients with muscle and bone issues. This helps free up doctors and nurses to focus on more serious cases.   'This model of care helps keep the emergency department flowing,' Paul said.   'By handling minor injuries, we allow the medical team to focus on other cases.'   This means that if you dislocate a finger, you can see a physio quickly instead of waiting behind more serious cases or people with the flu or a stomach bug. 🩺   Emergency physiotherapists like Paul work closely with medical staff to find patients who can benefit from this approach. This way, people with less serious injuries get treated quickly.   'We have a great Allied Health team at Redland Hospital and the Redlands Satellite Hospital,' Paul said. 'We work closely with other medical professions to help get people back on their feet.' A big thank you to Paul and the team for all they do for the patients at Redlands Satellite Hospital! ❤️ Via Metro South Health

The Cairns Hospital used to host annual balls in the early 1900s and they were extravagant affairs. 💅 The balls were organised by the hospital committee to raise funds. They were often held along the Esplanade—sometimes in the Court House building on Abbott Street. Each ball had different themes, including ‘plain’ or ‘fancy dress’ as well as separate adult’s and children's balls. Prizes were awarded to ‘the best fancy set' and also to 'the best fancy-dressed lady and gentleman’. Check out the award-winning Highlanders themed fancy set. 👇 A ‘Ladies Page’ from the old North Queensland Register paper described some of the dresses worn to the 1901 ball: 🌹 'black silk grenadine trimmed with silver passementerie' 🌹 'pink moire skirt trimmed with bands of lace, bodice with sash of pink chiffon' 🌹 'cream satin, bodice trimmed with pearl ornaments and sprays of poppies.' On one occasion, 'dancing was kept up till past 2 a.m. and everyone appeared to be thoroughly satisfied with the entertainment obtained.' A little bit of boogie at a hospital ball can do wonders for your mental wellbeing! 💃 Have you ever been to a hospital ball? ℹ️ Sources: Trove. Cairns Hospital Ball. Patricia and Jes-Wah, the renal pharmacists at North West Hospital and Health Service, do much more than just fill prescriptions. 💊 'Pharmacy is about understanding what patients need and providing support,' Jes-Wah said. Renal pharmacists help doctors create effective treatment plans and encourage patients to take an active role in their health. 🤝 In the past ten years, testing kidney function has become standard in blood work, using the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) test. Having pharmacists involved can lead to better health outcomes. They help manage issues like anemia and blood pressure, and they can reduce the risk of hospital stays and severe kidney disease. 📉 'We want patients to understand their medications and feel empowered,' Patricia said. The people of Mount Isa are fortunate to have Jes-Wah and Patricia looking after their health. Thank you both for your amazing work in raising awareness about renal disease! 🥰 Via North West Hospital and Health Service

When Dr Michael was 15 years old, his high school guidance officer told him 'no' when he raised the idea of a career in medicine. But, it was those words that pushed him to work harder in his senior years and gain entry to university. 🙌   ‘I can't really imagine myself being anything other than a plastic and reconstructive surgeon now,’ Dr Michael reflects.   He is currently Deputy Director of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Metro South Health, where he works as a specialist at Princess Alexandra and Redland Hospitals, as well as for the Queensland Children’s Hospital. 🏥   Plastic and reconstructive surgery focusses on restoring the body's normal appearance and function. Plastic surgeons work with patients who have birth defects, but also with those who may have suffered injuries due to an accident or illness. Dr Michael has changed people's lives by pioneering new technologies, including using 3D printed scaffolds to replace missing bone. These implants then encourage the growth of new bone. ‘Ultimately what I'm interested in is bio-fabrication of implants that reduce the morbidity of reconstructive surgery for patients, that give them an outcome that is much longer lasting than what we currently use,’ he said.   ‘The point of trying to do things a different way is to improve people's dignity and the quality of their life in surviving problems.' With a drive to build networks between academia, the clinical health sector and commercial partners, Dr Michael was instrumental in starting two organisations. He is Director of ACCISS Australia based at Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Clinical Director of the Herston Biofabrication Institute (HBI) at Metro North Health. In recognition of his work, Dr Michael was presented with the 2024 Industry Partnership Excellence Award at the Queensland Health Research Excellence Showcase, along with a $3500 grant to fund his important work. Thank you for your passionate contribution to medical innovation in Queensland, Dr Michael! We're glad you didn't take 'no' for an answer. ❤️

Jess is a vital link for patients battling lung cancer in Far North Queensland. ❤️ As a specialist lung cancer nurse at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service, she's a central point of contact for patients as they come to terms with their diagnosis and receive treatment. 'This time can be really stressful for patients, so having someone they can call directly to ask questions or troubleshoot issues with can help reduce one element of stress,' she said. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia with around 14,000 new cases diagnosed each year. There are a range of factors that can increase your risk of lung cancer including: 👉 smoking tobacco 👉 second-hand (passive) smoking 👉 exposure to asbestos 👉 exposure to radon (radioactive gas) 👉 exposure to occupational substances such as arsenic, cadmium, nickel, diesel fumes and soot 👉 HIV infection 👉 family history 👉 history of lung diseases such as lung fibrosis or emphysema 👉 older age. From July 2025, a national lung cancer screening program will be introduced for eligible 50 to 70-year-olds, and Jess encourages people with high risk factors to seek help early. 'Link in with your general practitioner early and take advantage of this national program so that potential lung cancers can be found and treated sooner rather than later,' she said. Wonderful work, Jess! Thanks for all you do for lung cancer patients and their families in Far North Queensland! 🥰 Via Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service ℹ️ Source: Qld Health (2024). Kathryn was the first patient to benefit from the new TeleOncology service at Esk Hospital, which launched in August. 👏 This service connects patients with the oncology (cancer care) team at Ipswich Hospital via two-way video call. For Kathryn, it means no longer needing an ambulance for the 2.5-hour return trip from her home to Ipswich, for care. 🚑 Now she gets to spend more time at home recovering with her cat and less time on the road. 🐱💚 Esk is the second rural hospital within West Moreton Hospital and Health Service to offer this service, with Laidley Hospital coming online earlier this year. Community health nurse Melissa describes it as a lifeline for rural patients, reducing travel, costs, and time away from loved ones. 'The service will expand to Gatton and Boonah Hospitals later this year, helping even more patients avoid lengthy trips to Ipswich Hospital,' she said. TeleOncology is just one of the ways telehealth can enhance care, build skills, and keep highly trained professionals in rural communities. With over 8,310 West Moreton residents diagnosed with cancer between 2017 and 2021—the highest in Queensland—this service is a significant benefit to the community. Thank you to the incredible staff for making this a reality for rural and remote communities. 🥰 Via West Moreton Hospital and Health Service
