Are you making gains with your Sustainability Goals? Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has just released their 2030 Strategic Plan around packaging. The plan provide economic incentives for material circularity, establishes mechanisms to achieve national packaging targets and enhances the social license for brands using packaging. KEY POINTS: 1) Sustainability: Continued focus on using materials that contain recycled content or are recyclable. This includes considering eco-friendly adhesives and substrates. 2) Regulatory Compliance: Upcoming standards and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes may impact brands. "EPR schemes are policies where the responsibility for the end-of-life management of products (like recycling or disposal) is placed on the producer (your business) rather than on consumers or governments. This means you may be required to take on more responsibility (and potentially costs) for ensuring that your labels and packaging are properly recycled or disposed of after they are used by customers." 3) Recyclability: Ensure label materials do not hinder the recyclability of the packaging. Must educate our customers on using labels that meet recycling guidelines. Refer to the Australasian Recycling Label (ARL) guidelines (Prep Tool). 4) Customer Support: Companies should provide clear recycling instructions and communicate the benefits of sustainable labels to help customers meet their environmental goals. 5) Innovation and Costs: Companies are encouraged to stay ahead with sustainable innovations and be mindful of potential cost increases due to eco-modulated fees ( customer pays ) and new material options.
