Public Skills Australia staff Rohan Gordon and Kirsty Waugh have had a great week at the #AFAC24 conference in Sydney. They have really enjoyed the opportunity to speak to senior leaders and heads of agency across fire and emergency services. Here they are engaging with Jason Heffernan, Chief Officer of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Rick Nugent, Emergency Management Commissioner of Emergency Management Victoria. We’re at the #AFAC24 conference in Sydney this week! This year’s conference theme, Embracing innovation and disruption: Designing the future for our sector, aims to highlight the strength of an inclusive culture across emergency management. We are excited to see this echoed through a range of engaging keynote speakers, presentations and professional development workshops. Our Director of Corporate and Strategic Services, Rohan Gordon, and Director of Training Product Development, Kirsty Waugh, are at the Public Skills Australia booth #156! Come and say hello and hear about all our exciting work to support the fire and emergency services industry-sector.

As part of the Qualification Reform being undertaken by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), Public Skills Australia has conducted an analysis of 38 qualifications housed within the CSC Correctional Services, LGA Local Government and PSP Public Sector Training Packages. The purpose of this analysis has been to:  - classify each qualification into one of the three Purpose Models established by the Qualification Reform Design Group.   - evaluate the extent to which each qualification meets its identified purpose and identify opportunities for streamlining Training Packages. Based on this desktop analysis and industry-sector consultation, Public Skills Australia has identified three qualifications to be considered for removal: - CSC20122 Certificate II in Justice Services  - PSP50216 Diploma of Court Operations  - PSP50522 Diploma of Trade Measurement. We would like to hear from stakeholders of these qualifications. Our CEO, Jean Dyzel and Chair of the Public Skills Australia Board, Stuart Ellis were honoured to meet with the Hon Andrew Giles, Minister for Skills and Training while in Canberra last week.   We were happy to welcome the Minister to the Skills and Training Portfolio and discuss the role of Public Skills Australia, skills and training opportunities for Public Safety and Government and our company successes to date.   We thank Minister Giles for his keen interest and time.

This week, Public Skills Australia is attending the 2024 Developing Northern Australia Conference in #Karratha, Western Australia. This is a unique opportunity to hear from community members and business about the complex workforce and training challenges facing regional, remote and rural development in northern Australia. Key themes of the conference included development of place-based, human capital and liveability solutions, Indigenous nation building and diversification of economic development. The Hon Madeleine King MP, Minister for Northern Australia, launched the Northern Australia Action Plan 2024-2029 during the event, outlining 17 Areas for Continued Focus to help unlock the north’s economic potential. Rohan Gordon (our Director Corporate and Strategic Services) participated on a joint Jobs and Skills Australia and Jobs and Skills Council Panel Workshop. We thank Geoff Barbaro GAICD CMgr FIML (Skills Insight) for facilitating the workshop, along with panel members Natalie Turmine (Service and Creative Skills Australia (SaCSA), Alison Wall (Future Skills Organisation), Anthea Middleton (Powering Skills Organisation), Jennie Courtney (HumanAbility Ltd), Catherine Doherty (HumanAbility Ltd), Andrew Cameron (Skills Insight) and Steven Hall (Powering Skills Organisation) for sharing their insightful views. Public Skills Australia's Chair, Stuart Ellis AM and CEO Jean Dyzel are in Canberra this week meeting with key stakeholders.   This morning they met with Amy Crawford GAICD, CEO of the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) and her team to discuss Public Skills Australia’s Workforce Plan findings, emergent skilling opportunities for local government and the outcomes of the recent ALGA General Assembly.   We are always grateful for the opportunity to meet with our partners!

Yesterday, Public Skills Australia attended the 19th VET National Teaching and Learning Conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre! It was a great opportunity for James Stroud, our Manager Training Packages and Quality, to meet with Jo Waugh, Senior Research Officer from National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). During the conference, Jo presented on the research from NCVER. We thank VET Development Centre (VDC) Centre for organising this event!

Public Skills Australia’s CEO, Jean Dyzel, was at the National Skills Week Launch at the National Press Club of Australia in Canberra today.    The event was launched with an address by Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner, Jobs and Skills Australia. In his speech, he acknowledged the important role that Public Skills Australia will play in addressing workforce challenges within the public sector.   With this year’s National Skills Week theme being 'Game Changer', we are excited to hear about significant reforms in the Vocational Education and Training sector. These reforms will serve as a key driver in the career development of Australia’s workforce.
