Changes to Victoria’s WorkCover scheme came into effect from 31 March. These include new eligibility requirements for mental health claims. ·  A new definition of mental injury, to be an injury causing significant behavioural, cognitive or psychological dysfunction, and that has been diagnosed by a medical practitioner (GP/Psychiatrist) in accordance with the latest version of the DSM ·  For primary mental injury claims, the requirement that employment must be the strongest or largest contributing cause of a worker's mental injury for it to be eligible for compensation ·  A new exclusion for workers to no longer be eligible for compensation where a primary mental injury has been mainly caused by stress or burnout, from events that are considered usual or typical and are reasonably expected to occur in the course of their duties. Despite the new exclusion, workers may remain eligible for compensation in situations including: ·  Situations of repeated and unreasonable interpersonal conflict, considered to be bullying and harassment · Where injury has predominantly arisen from stress or burnout in work that is usually or typically traumatic (e.g. frontline workers) ·  Mental injury predominantly caused by a traumatic event in the workplace that is not usual or typical Eligibility changes apply to injuries that occurred after 31 March. It’s important to note that changes in compensation eligibility don’t change requirements for employers to ensure a safe working environment, or, to provide appropriate return to work support or accommodations to workers experiencing illness, injury, or disability. You can find out more about WorkCover changes by registering for the upcoming WorkSafe Victoria webinar via the link below (Tuesday 16 April, 10-11am), or visiting the WorkSafe website. If you’re looking for support in preventing, assessing, or responding to mental illness or injury in your organisation, get in contact with us at Proof of Character. Our goal is to help workplaces and their employees to thrive. #workplacepsychology #mentalinjury #workerscompensation #psychologicalassessment #returntowork #rehabilitation https://lnkd.in/gJN9hG8y

Last week, our Principal Psychologist, Dr Timothy Doyle, had the opportunity to collaborate with Trisha Wong and the team at mlcoa Canberra in co-hosting lunchtime discussions with ACT Government injury management and rehabilitation specialists. Conversations explored psychological assessment for mental health conditions, and treatment and management approaches that support Return-to-Work (RTW) capacity and outcomes. We shared case studies of claims related to performance concerns, behavioural changes, and workplace relationships, and had the opportunity to hear valuable insights from participants’ expertise and experience. We’re grateful to get to work alongside such a committed team! #MentalInjury #PsychoSocialSafety #RehabilitationAssessments #EarlyIntervention
