These nine years have passed in a flash - and yet so much has happened in that time! Perhaps the most tangible for our own business has been the acceleration of investment in renewable energy. Almost exactly eight years ago, our co-founder Nigel Lake spoke at the annual meeting of the Long Term Infrastructure Investors Association (LTIIA) in Frankfurt, raising the idea that renewables would become an infrastructure asset class. Generation had not been attractive before given high volatility of input costs and hence also an inability for generators to enter long-term offtake agreements. Today, we work with some 260 specialist funds who are writing cheques of $100m to $1bn plus to build a 21st century energy system. John Sheehy has played a critical role in helping our clients make the most of this opportunity - and much more beyond - and in helping to guide our team as we've expanded our activities from Australia to the Americas, Europe, Africa and beyond. Here's to the green energy road ahead! #Impact #Leadership #renewables

It’s nine years today since I joined Pottinger. It’s a tradition that we get the yellow jersey on our chair on our work anniversaries. In the corner of this photo is a picture of my daughter Scarlett who was the reason why Beck and I returned to Australia to progress our careers at home. I’ll always be grateful for the start I had at Linklaters and Clayton Utz. Thanks for taking a punt on a lawyer Cassandra Kelly AM and Nigel Lake!

ICYMI, New Zealand is reducing its barriers to foreign investment a little. We'd urge a little caution around the idea that simply gaining access to more capital will drive wages higher as there are lots of competing factors at work. In short, it matters a lot where that capital flows. For a little more detail, here are some notes from one of the bots we're trialling. https://lnkd.in/eHP4VFH7 New Zealand Will Ease Foreign Investment Laws to Attract Capital https://lnkd.in/ehdPChgK #crossborder #acquisitions #NewZealand #investment

On your journey to work today, keep an eye out for insects - ants, flies, bees and other pollinators. Then think back a decade or two and try to remember what was normal then... We flag this - and the important report below - as you are going to hear a *lot* more about biodiversity in the next year. Though the data in this document should be deeply unsettling, let's also see it as a reminder that there are many great opportunities to re-imagine how we approach business problems so that we find better solutions. For our friends in infrastructure, smart planting strategies around network infrastructure and solar farms can reduce maintenance costs and improve biodiversity - thus also offering benefits for neighbouring farms. A true win - win - win! #Nature #Impact #renewables #energy #SolarPV #NBS

🤯 85% decline in freshwater biodiversity since 1970. My heart is heavy today. Today’s #LivingPlanetReport is stark. 73% decline in wildlife populations overall. 85% decline in freshwater biodiversity. And, closest to my heart: 65% decline in Amazon River Dolphins in just 22 years. Those headline figures are shocking. But it’s when I think about what they really mean that my anxiety rises. It’s not just the deep sadness of imagining a future without pink river dolphins, or buzzing bees in my garden, or eagles soaring overhead. Such catastrophic declines means we are losing the important roles species play, like grazing, pollinating, or cycling nutrients. This in turn reduces the availability of things we depend on nature for: clean water, food, carbon storage, and a stable climate. Nature is our life support system. Simple as. As I and many others prepare to head to #COP16Colombia 🇨🇴, the message to governments is clear: Biodiversity loss affects us all. We must take urgent action to halt it, for people and for nature. What do you feel when you read these statistics? 📉🌍 🐬🐝🦅🧑🧑🧒🧒🪲🐟🦧🐘 —— Read the WWF / Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Living Planet Report 2024 here: https://lnkd.in/ei43TY3a Please share ^

The Federal government in conjunction with the NSW state government are hosting the first Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 from 8 to 10 October 2024. The Summit will bring together leaders to explore effective strategies for achieving global commitments under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The event will focus on understanding the systemic changes needed to value nature and tackle biodiversity loss. Participants will work toward building consensus on the economic frameworks required to boost investment in nature, share successful practices and implementation pathways, and highlight innovative tools and approaches that lead to nature-positive outcomes. #EnergyEquityEnvironment

Pretty much anyone who keeps an eye on anything related to sustainability will have come across the idea of our ecological footprint - and will surely have heard of Earth Overshoot Day. Both have long been important reminders that we live in a finite global greenhouse with finite resources. So we're thrilled to hear that the founder of Global Footprint, and creator of these concepts, Mathis Wackernagel, has been awarded one of this year's Sustainability Awards by the Nobel Sustainability Trust. Bravissimo! More below - and also at https://lnkd.in/eeMtAKkY. https://lnkd.in/eeMtAKkY

Renewable energy remains the cheapest.   More data showing that renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels has been published and yet consumers are experiencing ever higher energy prices. The key to understanding this apparent dissonance is that we are living in a worst of both worlds with the case for base load coal and peaking gas being impaired by renewables, that currently lack the scale or storage to energize the whole grid the whole of the time. So with system rules pricing electricity by the most expensive form of generation used ie gas, (regardless of how much cheaper generation is used) we will continue to see volatile and high prices until the transition is near compete.   https://lnkd.in/dEfZhzGU

Pottinger has acted as sole financial advisor to Photon Energy NV on the sale of the Leeton, Fivebough and Boggabri solar and hybrid projects in NSW, Australia. This is Pottinger’s seventh transaction for Photon Energy Group and the most recent in a series of deals for renewables developers and investors seeking exposure to distributed energy resources (DER) in Australia. John Sheehy, CEO of Pottinger, noted: “It is great to see our long-term client Photon Energy Group continue to realise value from its development activity in Australia. Congratulations to the Photon Energy Group and CleanPeak Energy teams.” John was supported by Associate, Matthew Rath, on the transaction. #EnergyEquityEnvironment

Ever since the 1990s when you could put a “.com” at the end of your company’s name to put a zero at the end of its valuation, tech investors have had to navigate the difference between long term ground redefining technology and short term investment hype. The current tech focus is on AI, which has much to promise, but has already delivered high premiums on otherwise ordinary SaaS valuations. However the latest data from Crunchbase shows AI investment is consolidating, with a fall in transaction volumes from over 900 in each of Q1 and Q2 to under 700 in Q3. This notwithstanding the number of over $100m investments has remained steady at between 24 and 27 per quarter throughout the year. While one quarter is not a trend, we will continue to watch with interest as they evolve.
