PEXA community partner Victoria University’s Annual Community Tree Planting Day is a highly anticipated occasion in the PEXA calendar, and this year was no exception! Powered by their #volunteering leave, 13 PEXA staff donned their gloves and sun hats to spend the day helping to bring more greenery to VU’s Werribee campus. “I'm happy to say that we were successful in achieving our goal of planting over 2,500 trees (including 17 different species of trees) – helping towards the program’s total goal of planting 500,000 trees to increase tree canopy coverage in Melbourne's western suburbs,” said Timothy Sunderland, CRM and Analytics Coordinator at PEXA. “The day really taught me just how fun and rewarding volunteering days like this can be, plus it was great to connect with colleagues I typically don’t work with! I'll be back next year for sure,” added Tim. After three consecutive years of planting, Werribee is now home to an extra 12,500 trees. This week, PEXA was proud to sponsor the Housing All Australians national breakfast tour. The breakfast events saw 900 industry colleagues in attendance across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. We were also lucky to host a Lunch and Learn session in the PEXA Melbourne offices for employees online and in-person. Keynote speaker Gregg Colburn, Associate Professor at the University of Washington shared key findings from his research on North America’s housing crisis, which challenged us to reshape what we think we know about the causes of homelessness. According to his research: 🏠 Homelessness thrives amid affluence, not poverty 🏠 Where rental prices are high and vacancies are low, homelessness tends to be high 🏠 “Precipitating events” such as job loss, divorce, addiction or illness are not causes of homelessness, rather they make people more vulnerable to experiencing homelessness where housing is unaffordable or in low supply. The bottom line? ➡️ Homelessness is a housing problem. PEXA’s ‘Hack Day’ is an exciting annual event where employees team up to pitch their best and brightest ideas to a Shark Tank-style panel of judges, hoping to gain sponsorship and bring their idea to life. One of last year’s winners was a proposal to redesign our induction experience make it more engaging than ever before, presented by People Experience team members Chanh Kien (She/Her), Anna Smith and Sean Goodman. In July, after 9 months of hard work supported by our partnership with Victoria University, the team successfully delivered their project at an exciting premiere event which saw our Melbourne office transformed into a cinema complete with choc-tops. Last week, PEXA released its inaugural ESG Report as part of our Annual Reporting suite. We are proud of this report as it reflects our ambition, and where we are today in our ESG journey. We’re excited to officially announce that PEXA has launched in Tasmania! Working with the Tasmanian Government and Tasmanian Land Titles Office, PEXA facilitated the first re-finance service with select banks and panels transacting through the Exchange. This is the first exciting step towards making digital conveyancing available for all practitioners in Tasmania, and helping to safely and securely settle the properties of Tassie’s homebuyers and sellers. Since June, PEXA community partner Homes for Homes has donated a total of $300,000 to social and community housing projects in their mission to end homelessness in Australia 👏 👏👏 Of those grants, PEXA was proud to contribute to a $100,000 for Common Equity Housing SA Ltd. Collaborating with their member organisation Copper Triangle, funds will be used to create five two-bedroom units with communal gardens and common areas for low-income elderly singles and couples to age in place. As we wrap up Homelessness Week, we ask you to consider supporting Homes for Homes. For homeowners or renters, you can make a promise to donate 0.1% of your home’s sale price or rent. Or for conveyancers or property lawyers using the PEXA Exchange, you can encourage your clients to register before settlement to donate when they sell their property. FY24 was a big year for PEXA’s Advisory Councils, who have been working with our team to help drive progress so that lawyers and conveyancers get the most out of our services.
