The Rio Tinto Wildcats Academy is proud to be a part of some great things happening in the Mirrabooka community. ❤️
In late 2022, Danny Mills Eva Mwakichako Solomon Dech Cheyne Cameron and I committed to a range of initiatives aimed at engaging local young people in Mirrabooka City of Stirling (Western Australia) through basketball. Over the last 18 months we have successfully: Established Herb Graham Recreation Centre as the home of the Perth Wildcats Academy which provides emerging athletes from 14 to 19 years of age, with an emphasis on local Aboriginal and African kids, with the opportunity to develop under Wildcats coaching and performance staff. Rejuvenated the Perth Rhinos Basketball Club which aims to remove the financial barriers that often prevent local young people from participating, with Solomon Dech and Garomma Dembali providing players with both basketball development and discipline. Upgraded the outdoor courts at Herb Graham Recreation Centre to provide the local community with open access to high quality basketball infrastructure, based on valued input from Basketball WA and the legend that is Greg Hire. Commenced inclusive domestic basketball competitions and programs through a Partnership Agreement with Senators Basketball Joshua Nipps Michael Norman. Partnered with the perth african nations sports association to establish the 'Empower the People' and 'Peer Leaders' Programs. Hosted the National Basketball League (NBL) 3x3 Big Hustle at Herb Graham Recreation Centre in March/April 2024. All of these efforts culminated last weekend when players from the Perth Rhinos were visited by Mayor Mark Irwin as well as alumni including Duop Reath from the Portland Trail Blazers @ the Rose Quarter and Australian Boomers, Sunday Dech from the Adelaide 36ers, Gorjok Gak from the Tasmania JackJumpers and Seb Reath from the East Perth Eagles Basketball Association. Those of us who love basketball already know that it transcends abilities, backgrounds, borders, cultures and languages. In Mirrabooka, basketball is proving once again to be a unifying force for community. Many thanks to Karl Mallet and the many others who have played a part.
