Did you know more than half of all serious accidents at Queensland coal mines this year were finger injuries? As an industry, we need to do better. Here’s how we can make a change.

Recent serious incidents in the mining industry have highlighted the importance for Mines to have a compliant Risk and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management system. But what does a compliant Risk and WHS management system look like? To answer this question, it is necessary to understand the Mines’ statutory obligations and regulatory requirements. Acts of parliament, such as the Coal Mine Safety and Health Act Queensland 1999 (CMSHA), set out the general principles and objectives for managing risk and WHS at a Mine. Subordinate Regulations such as Coal Mine Safety and Health Regulation 2017 prescribe detailed rules the mine must adhere to when managing Risk and WHS matters. The Mines Inspectorate provides Recognised Standards and Guidance Notes that state ways of achieving acceptable levels of risk and methods to manage WHS matters. So, the government provides direction on how a mine is to think, walk and talk by stating: - Why the systems need to be in place - What the systems need to deliver / achieve - How they should be designed and developed - When and where they are to be implemented, and adhered to - Who has responsibilities. The Resources and Infrastructure Industry (RII) Training Package provides Nationally recognised units of competency that detail the steps managers can take to ensure their Risk and WHS Management systems are compliant, i.e.; - RIIRIS601E Establish and maintain risk management systems; and - RIIWHS601E Establish and maintain the WHS management system. These units are recognised by the Coal Mine Health and Safety Advisory Committee and, the Queensland Board of Examiners require candidates hold these units as a prerequisite to sitting the Senior Site Executive Exam. BUT, getting back to the original question, if you were playing a game of Pictionary, and you had the task of drawing a Risk and WHS management system, what would you draw? The reason this task remains difficult is because management systems vary in complexity and scope depending on the nature, size and type of Mine. There are, however key elements that form the framework of any Risk and WHS management system. Understanding each element of the framework allows us to draw even the most complex Risk and WHS management system. FAMILY DAY ON-SITE 😀 Recently, CITIC Pacific Mining warmly hosted its employees' families on-site at its Sino Iron magnetite mine. This initiative provided an opportunity for employees' children and partners to witness their loved ones at work. The sector recognises the importance of maintaining strong family connections, and what's cooler than visiting your family member on-site?!
