Generations of babies! Meet Iana… a senior midwife at Katherine District Hospital (KDH) who has been birthing multiple generations in Katherine for 36 years! Since 1988, Iana has become an integral part of women’s birthing experiences, providing an abundance of support and empathy. When asked how many children she has birthed, Iana said, “too many to count”. “One day I pulled out all of the birth registers from 1988 and over the years, there have been about 5,000 births. I have probably participated in about 200 of those,” she said. “It’s very special, because I have birthed children who are now having children of their own. “Every birth is just as special as the last." Looking back, Iana recalls a time when she was comforting a young woman who had travelled from a remote community to give birth at the hospital. “She seemed sad and lonely. So, I ran back to the charts to see that she was born in Katherine,” Iana said. “Whilst I wasn’t her midwife, it was that same day, at the same time 16 years before, I was giving her mother breastfeeding advice. “It was really special to be able to tell her that.” For more information about birthing services in Katherine visit: https://lnkd.in/gS7cbdA9

Happy World Pharmacist Day! Today, we celebrate and recognise the vital role pharmacists play in building healthier communities, globally and locally. At NT Health, our pharmacists play an important role in the supply and management of medicines in our hospitals and remote communities. Steve, the lead pharmacist at the Royal Darwin Hospital’s (RDH) Intensive Care Unit, provides expert advice to patients and clinicians to ensure medicines are appropriate for patients. On a daily basis, Steve monitors his patients by checking their renal and liver functions and monitors what current medications and doses they are on. “I really enjoy my role as a pharmacist within the hospital because every day is a challenge,” Steve said. “It’s been great as a pharmacist to be actively involved in the direct treatment of patients - because back when I began my career in 1997, our role only involved the supply of medication. “The scope of practice for pharmacists has dramatically changed over the years, which is great.”  As a pharmacist in modern society, Steve also has the challenge of making sure the hospital receives a healthy supply of medicines. “The other thing that’s a big responsibility for me, and other pharmacists not only across the Territory, but Australia wide, is trying to manage medication shortages,” Steve said. “We work behind the scenes dealing with the logistics, keeping consultants informed and discuss what possible alternatives there could be.” “I also love providing medicines education to patients and their families, to coordinate the continuity of care on discharge from hospital.” For more information about NT clinical pharmacy services visit: https://lnkd.in/geY9jMX7

Did you know that a child and family health nurse is a registered nurse with extra qualifications to look after babies and young children? Many are midwives, too! Gabbi, Allyson and Renae (pictured left to right), are child and family health nurses at the Palmerston Community Care Centre, and each are at different stages of their career within the speciality. Renae was inspired to study to become a child and family health nurse when she had children of her own. “After receiving help from child and family health nurses with my own babies, it motivated me to want to do the same for others,” Renae, a registered nurse and midwife, said. “In this role, we wear many different hats to help to raise healthy children. This includes delivering health promotion and supporting families to manage developmental challenges.” For Allyson, one of the key roles of a child and family health nurse is to help prevent children and families from hospitalisation. “The window where we provide care, zero to five years, can help set up child up for good health for the rest of their lives,” Allyson said. “It’s a rewarding job where you can get to know patients when they are well, providing education and advocacy. Over the five year period you can build trust with children and families, which helps lead to effective preventative healthcare.”  Gabbi, a nurse and midwife who is part way through her studies to become a child and family nurse, said it’s important that specialised healthcare is available children. “Between the ages of zero to five, a child goes through a huge amount of growth, development and change. By partnering with a child and family health nurse, families have the opportunity to ensure all the important milestones that happen across those years are met,” Gabbi said.
