"The cost of disasters is projected to reach a staggering $9.1 billion per year by 2060 if we don't take action.” At today's sold-out #ADRC24 conference, our own Amanda Leck, GAICD shared insights into the State Disaster Mitigation Plan (SDMP). "It's time to shift the balance." Amanda led the audience through the SDMP's concept: a plan that adapts and mitigates against natural hazards, making communities more resilient and prepared. The plan outlines 37 action points, including a crucial state policy on managed relocation. Our agency is also actively working on disaster preparedness initiatives, such as the Get Ready Campaign. This campaign will be implemented across communities across the coming years. Exciting news for the Northern Rivers! 🏘️ We are pleased to announce that a seventh land site under the $100 million Resilient Lands Program (RLP). This is part of our $790 million Resilient Homes Program. It aims to provide safer housing options for our community. Junction Hill has been added to the list of release sites, joining East Lismore, Goonellabah, North Lismore, Brunswick Heads, Casino, and Lennox Heads. Together, these releases could potentially deliver over 4,300 new homes to the region. We're also working with Transport for NSW and Clarence Valley Council to improve transport infrastructure in Junction Hill. We're committed to working with councils, landowners, infrastructure providers, and partners to speed up land and housing developments. Let's rebuild the Northern Rivers together! Embracing sustainability! ♻ We’re working with experts from Living Lab Northern Rivers and the UTS Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building to turn flood-affected homes into something new. From repurposing to relocation, we're creating a more sustainable future and reducing landfill. One trial is currently underway to identify timbers that can be reused, and a second trial evaluates cost-effective separation methods for repurposing materials from buyback homes. This data will inform our future recycling strategies.   We're preserving the community's history by documenting the stories of significant homes with the Living Memory project – a collaboration by Living Lab Northern Rivers and NSW Reconstruction Authority, recording the cultural and historical significance of some of the buyback homes to present as a legacy at a later date.   #NSWReconstructionAuthority #Sustainability #Recovery

Last week, 11 schools from the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley collaborated on a flood preparedness campaign in a two-day hackathon. These future leaders learned from experts at the NSW Reconstruction Authority, NSW State Emergency Service and the Bureau of Meteorology. They then used their knowledge to create impactful videos, posters, and resources to educate their communities. The results? Inspiring! This initiative demonstrates the power of youth engagement in building resilience. A big thank you to our partners at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Education for their support.   A big thank you to all our Northern Rivers recovery partners and stakeholders who attended last week’s NSW Recovery Plan forum in Lismore. It was a valuable opportunity to learn and collaborate on planning and preparing for future disaster recovery in the region. We had good discussions about the state and local recovery plans and how to involve local communities and First Nations people more in recovery planning.     Our expert panel talked about how everyone has a role to play in recovery and how we still have a long way to go in improving funding arrangements for recovery efforts.    Our team in the North Coast region is committed to working closely with local communities, governments, and partners to improve local recovery planning. #NSWReconstructionAuthority #Recovery #DisasterPreparedness

That's a wrap on the latest Central West Housing Program community engagement sessions! More than 300 residents came together across the Parkes, Forbes, Lachlan and Cabonne Shires over the last four weeks, to view new future flood risk mapping, hear about proposed measures to help make homes more flood resilient and to share their feedback on the proposed program. The Resilient Homes Program – Central West aims to build stronger, safer communities with measures that help those most at risk from future floods by increasing the resilience of their home or removing residents from harm’s way. DAPs are comprehensive assessments of hazards in a particular place, they explore potential risk reduction strategies and outline steps to mitigate the impacts of a disaster.
