On Tuesday night in Canberra, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia won the Architecture and Building Conservation category in the ACT National Trust Heritage Awards.  This recognises the first stage of works in our ambitious and far-reaching placemaking strategy that integrates an enriched public program with refreshed heritage spaces, such as the Library (below), the Mediatheque, and our foyer. We would like to thank the extraordinary design team who played a key role in shaping our strategy, and our skilled contractors for sensitively delivering these projects. Technology, language, history and creativity will converge at National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in Canberra for four days this October when global leaders from galleries, libraries, archives and museums gather for Fantastic Futures: the world's first in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges of AI for the cultural sector.  This is a unique opportunity for GLAM professionals and academics to join us in Canberra for talks from more than 30 contributors from around the world and six incredible keynote speakers, and tours, workshops, food and performances, including by award-winning Australian audiovisual artist and composer Robin Fox. Today, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia is publishing a world first: the findings from our International Video Game Preservation Survey, a global survey that we opened late 2023 in collaboration with The Strong and with the support of British Film Institute (BFI) National Archive. For the first time, we can report baseline data on the current landscape of the global video game preservation field, and hear direct from the international organisations undertaking it on the key issues, obstacles and long-term challenges facing the industry. It is a crucial time for the field and the survey findings are stark. Video games are now one of the pre-eminent cultural forms worldwide but much of their history has become inaccessible because of barriers to access, lack of financial and staff resource, and lack of institutional recognition of the format. We need to do better to work together before video games go the same way as silent films, with too many lost to us forever. #SavetheGames #VideoGames #DigitalPreservation

Ghost Trees by James McGrath and Gary Sinclair is the next unique and captivating audiovisual experience to take up residence at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in Canberra. In Science Week 2024, we’re bringing audiences a new way to connect with nature: through science, data and audiovisual art. Ghost Trees is open now: a free, immersive journey into the digital memory of the endangered Rushworth Forest on the lands of the Ngurai-illam Wurrung people in Victoria, using data captured by the @Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network. For NAIDOC Week this year, we'll be celebrating First Nations icons who keep the fires burning and fully embody being BLAK, LOUD & PROUD, the official theme of NAIDOC Week 2024. These artists share their culture and stories across stage and screen for audiences in Australia and the world over, and the NFSA is proud custodians of much of their work.
