Life expectancy shouldn't be a postcode lottery. Yet, figures show a stark difference between urban centres like North Sydney and remote areas like Outback NT. In North Sydney, males can expect to live up to 13.9 years longer than those in the Outback NT, with females in the city living 11.3 years more than than women in remote areas. This gap highlights the urgent need for equitable healthcare access across all regions. During National Rural Health Month, we're spotlighting these disparities to advocate for better health solutions in rural, regional, and remote communities. Because everyone deserves the same chance for a long and healthy life, no matter where they live. 📢 Share this post to raise awareness and join the conversation about how we can close the health gap. Patient assisted travel schemes (PATS) are an important element of providing equitable access to essential health services for people in rural, regional and remote Australia. PATS provide patients (and eligible escorts) with financial assistance towards the costs involved in travelling to, and staying near, non-GP specialist medical services that are not available to them locally. The allowance rates vary across the country and the National Rural Health Alliance has recently released an updated fact sheet on PATS which provides the most current details for each state and territory. This #NationalRuralHealthMonth, we're shining a spotlight on the journeys of Jimmy, Nina, and Charlotte, three nursing students who've just completed a transformative 20-week rural placement through the Extended Nursing Placement Program (ENPP). Partnered with Friend of the Alliance, University of Sydney School of Rural Health and various healthcare organisations across New South Wales, the ENPP offers students an invaluable deep dive into rural health care. From participating in the vibrant Broken Heel Festival to handling emergencies, these students have embraced the full spectrum of rural community life and healthcare. Their hands-on experience in diverse settings—from acute to palliative care—illustrates the unique challenges and profound rewards of rural nursing. By living and working within these communities, Jimmy, Nina, and Charlotte have not only gained essential skills but have also built lasting bonds that enrich both their professional and personal lives. As we celebrate their accomplishments, we're reminded of the critical role that programs like ENPP play in strengthening rural health care and encouraging young professionals to build their futures in these vibrant communities. #RuralHealth #FutureNurses #CommunityCare #HealthcareHeroes

Did you know rural Australia plays a pivotal role in our nation's economy? With resources and rural industries accounting for 80% of Australia's exports, our rural communities are more than scenic landscapes—they are economic powerhouses. The Australians who live in these areas work hard to deliver these exports. They deserve equitable access to health care, but often can't receive it. We need better policies and equitable funding that supports the health of rural Australians, which in turn keeps the economy healthy. This National Rural Health Month, we celebrate the immense contributions and resilience of those who live and work in these vital regions. 🌳Join us in calling for equitable health care funding for rural Australia. #NationalRuralHealthMonth #RuralStrength #EconomicImpact #NRHM24 Susanne ( Susi ) Tegen Australian Physiotherapy Association Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) Australian Psychological Society (APS) Australian Rural Health Education Network College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (CICM) The Council of Ambulance Authorities Inc.
