Life expectancy shouldn't be a postcode lottery. Yet, figures show a stark difference between urban centres like North Sydney and remote areas like Outback NT. In North Sydney, males can expect to live up to 13.9 years longer than those in the Outback NT, with females in the city living 11.3 years more than than women in remote areas. This gap highlights the urgent need for equitable healthcare access across all regions. During National Rural Health Month, we're spotlighting these disparities to advocate for better health solutions in rural, regional, and remote communities. Patient assisted travel schemes (PATS) are an important element of providing equitable access to essential health services for people in rural, regional and remote Australia. This #NationalRuralHealthMonth, we're shining a spotlight on the journeys of Jimmy, Nina, and Charlotte, three nursing students who've just completed a transformative 20-week rural placement through the Extended Nursing Placement Program (ENPP). Partnered with Friend of the Alliance, University of Sydney School of Rural Health and various healthcare organisations across New South Wales, the ENPP offers students an invaluable deep dive into rural health care. From participating in the vibrant Broken Heel Festival to handling emergencies, these students have embraced the full spectrum of rural community life and healthcare. Their hands-on experience in diverse settings—from acute to palliative care—illustrates the unique challenges and profound rewards of rural nursing. By living and working within these communities, Jimmy, Nina, and Charlotte have not only gained essential skills but have also built lasting bonds that enrich both their professional and personal lives. Last Friday, Alliance member CRANAplus celebrated the remarkable contributions of nurse practitioners, midwives, and healthcare teams dedicated to advancing health care in Australia's remote communities. 🏅 Erica Stone RN received the Gayle Woodford Memorial Scholarship, aiming to enhance health outcomes for remote and Indigenous populations through her Graduate Certificate in Remote Health Practice. 🏅 Catherine Priestly RN, exemplifying dedication and cultural sensitivity, won the Early to Remote Practice Award for her impactful work in Wadeye Health Centre, NT. 🏅 J’Belle Foster RN was honored with the Excellence in Education and/or Research Award for her pioneering efforts in tuberculosis management across the Torres Strait Islands and beyond. 🏅 Susan Wilkes, RN, was recognized with the Excellence in Remote and Isolated Health Practice Award for her advocacy and mentorship in Birdsville, ensuring high standards of health access. 🏅 The Indian Ocean Territories Health Services Nursing Team received the Collaborative Team Award for their innovative health service delivery across remote islands. 🏅 Lesley Woolf, a tireless advocate for Indigenous health, received the prestigious Aurora Award for Remote and Isolated Professional of the Year for her lifelong contributions to health in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
