An independent, not for profit, community-based organisation providing a range of services to the community legal sector
About us
Community legal centres are independent, not-for-profit, community-based organisations that provide a range of services to everyday people, including people experiencing discrimination and disadvantage. We assist communities across Australia. Each year Centres help hundreds of thousands of people through providing a range of services for individual people as well as more broadly for the community. Centres provide a range of legal services as well as undertaking early intervention and preventative strategies such as community legal education and community development and individual skill building. Community legal centres also play a key role in community engagement, advocacy and law and policy reform. More broadly, Centres work to develop and facilitate partnerships between legal assistance providers and legal and non-legal services (for example, domestic violence organisations, community health organisations, housing services and drug and alcohol services). This allows the Centres to provide holistic help to people and is designed to avoid escalation of legal problems. Centres provide services in offices, communities and health care settings across Australia. Centres also work together in National Networks to share information and good practice and undertake policy and advocacy work. Community Legal Centres Australia's members are the eight state and territory community legal centres associations. Together, we represent nearly 180 community legal centres across Australia. Only some associations have a funded Secretariat with dedicated offices and staff (NSW, VIC, QLD and WA). It was amazing to see so much engagement from all across the country in our #SaveCommunityLegalCentres social media national day of action this week. Here are just some of the photos we saw shared, calling on the government to #FundFrontlineServices

Community Legal Centres Australia strongly supports significant additional funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services, and Aboriginal community-controlled community legal centres. The next National Legal Assistance Partnership Agreement MUST enshrine and give full effect to the National Closing the Gap Priority Principles and invest in strong community-controlled legal assistance services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. (Post 3 of 3) Yesterday we wrapped up a fantastic three days at Australian Parliament House where we've been meeting with MPs and Senators to build support for the #SaveCommunityLegalCentres End the funding crisis campaign. Great to know that there is so much support for the vital work community legal centres do amongst national leaders from across the political spectrum. We'll be back in the capital later this year to keep the pressure on the Federal Government to deliver the funding boost and funding security community legal centres - and the people and communities who rely on them - desperately need by December 2024. #SaveCommunityLegalCentres #FundFrontlineServices #CommunityLaw Karen Andrews MP Sally Sitou Josh Burns - Federal Member for Macnamara Zaneta Mascarenhas Katy Gallagher Maria Vamvakinou MP Rebekha Sharkie Tracey Roberts MP Michelle Landry Bill Shorten Kylea Tink Andrew Wallace The Hon. "In many communities across Australia, victim-survivors of domestic and family violence rely on community legal centres for legal assistance and holistic support. For too long, this work has gone unrecognised, resulting in a critical funding shortfall for community legal centres. The Australian, State and Territory Governments must fund community legal centres if they are serious about ending gendered violence in one generation." - Domestic Violence NSW Check out the #SaveCommunityLegalCentres campaign website: https://lnkd.in/g4wwuP5R #FundFrontlineServices #CommunityLaw

"Many of the women we support have legal issues related to the economic abuse they’ve experienced but also few resourced because of the economic abuse. Often, a Women’s Legal Service/community legal centre is the only remaining option for support at a critical time. It is unjustifiable that so many people miss out on this support because of chronic underfunding of community legal centres." - Centre for Women's Economic Safety Check out the #SaveCommunityLegalCentres campaign website: https://lnkd.in/g4wwuP5R #FundFrontlineServices #CommunityLaw

"Our partnership with Barwon Community Legal Service has been unique in its efficacy. Creative, quick response programs have been developed on the fly to engage young regional people in immediate legal distress and have empowered countless young people to better navigate the legal landscape, resulting in better physical and mental health." - Fingle Sin Check out the #SaveCommunityLegalCentres campaign website: https://lnkd.in/g4wwuP5R #FundFrontlineServices #CommunityLaw
