The Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) is the legislated peak body for Victoria’s 79 local councils.

About us

The Municipal Association of Victoria is the peak representative and advocacy body for Victoria's 79 councils. The MAV was formed in 1879 and the Municipal Association Act 1907 anointed the MAV the official voice of local government in Victoria. Today, the MAV is a driving and influential force behind a strong and strategically positioned local government sector. Our role, broadly speaking is to represent and advocate the interests of local government, lobby for a 'fairer deal' for councils, raise the sector's profile, ensure its long-term security and provide policy advice, strategic advice, capacity building programs and insurance services to local government. The success of the MAV stems from its people and the Association has prided itself on building a quality team of staff and consultants to ensure that the needs of its members are met, and that the MAV is well positioned to fulfil its purpose. Inclusivity and understanding are more important than ever. Councils have long led the way in this discussion, aiming to create equitable communities for everyone.   You may have seen the decision to not change the data collected by the next census, despite the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) including gender, sexual orientation and variations of sex characteristics in the proposed shortlist. Collecting LGBTIQA+ data isn’t just about numbers, it's about acknowledging and understanding people.   For councils, collecting this data is critical for a number of reasons. It informs policy making; accurate data helps councils craft policies that reflect the diverse needs of LGBTIQA+ individuals and communities ensuring their voices are heard and acknowledged along with all citizens.    It’s also vitally important in allowing councils to allocate resources – including mental health support, community events, or inclusive spaces – more effectively, targeting support where it’s needed most.   In not doing so, the census will miss the opportunity to ensuring that every community member has the opportunity to thrive. #inclusion #datadriven #localgoverment #LGBTIQA+ #publicpolicy

  • This week we hosted 133 council officers online for a 'pint-sized PD' on Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) and high level documents, including Council Plans and Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plans. Councils heard from Kathy Oliver at GenderWorks Australia who took them through the relevant legislation, who is responsible for completing a GIA on these plans and a detailed case study. The session provided practical tips and suggested processes to progress this important piece of work. Thank you to everyone who attended 👏👏
