“We were fortunate. But there are families who have had a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and a different genetic makeup, and they could only access the treatment if the child began to show symptoms. So they wait on the edge of their seat wondering, is that a symptom? Do they qualify now?” Carolyn and her husband lost their first child to SMA in 2014. When their third child was born with SMA, he was given treatment at 5 days old that saved his life. But not all children with SMA can access the treatment through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. “Having the security of there being an available treatment that was funded through the PBS has been life changing for us. Without that, I don't know that we would have felt confident to try for another child.” Carolyn’s first child, Hannah, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) when she was 3 months old. Michelle lives with lupus erythematosus, a debilitating autoimmune disease. Thanks to the PBS, she has been able to access life-changing medicines to manage her condition and live independently. “Without access to these medicines I’d probably be unable to continue in paid employment and I’d be a lot more reliant on social services and carers and my disease would be left unchecked to damage my organs and joints without any resistance.
