Associate Professor Jennifer Neil rarely encountered #familyviolence in her GP practice, until she learned how to look for it. “I had no idea of the scale of the problem or how commonly family violence presents to health professionals without it being obvious,” she said. “Once I started asking my patients with indicators of potential violence about their experience, a huge number of survivors suddenly came out of the woodwork. They’d always been there; I just hadn’t been asking the right questions. Professor Janet Anderson from Monash Translational Medicine has received a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) 2023 Partnership Projects PRC2 grant to lead a research project that will develop comprehensive geriatric assessments to improve #perioperativecare for older people. The research aims to establish the effectiveness, cost effectiveness and implementation pathways for #comprehensivegeriatricassessments in Australian health services for older people having elective hip and knee replacements. We were delighted to host the Carer Health & Wellbeing Service launch yesterday at the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA), attended by the Hon. Jodie Belyea MP, Federal Member Dunkley, representatives from Peninsula Health and Monash University, as well as wider community members. We are particularly grateful to Ivan Freer, who attended and shared his story and lived experience of being a long-term carer who is accessing this important service. The Carer Health & Wellbeing Service is part of the NCHA’s Living Labs Research Program, and being led by Monash University’s Rehabilitation, Ageing, and Independent Living Research Centre (RAIL) and clinical leaders from Peninsula Health. With studies showing that two thirds of the care of older Australians at home is being provided by an unpaid older family member or friend, we know that often the carer’s own health and wellbeing needs fall by the wayside, and feelings of isolation and loneliness become real. The Carer Health & Wellbeing Service prioritises the often-neglected health and wellbeing needs of older carers, through access to a team including social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. The interdisciplinary team assess and implement treatments addressing the carer’s self-prioritised needs, which may include addressing stress, isolation, poor sleep quality, low physical activity, or improving manual handling skills. Professor Anton Peleg from Monash Translational Medicine has received a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) 2023 TCR Improving Infection Prevention and Control in Residential Aged Care Homes grant. The newly funded research program will develop optimised models and approaches for infection prevention and control in #residentialagedcare homes through a highly engaged co-design process with people with lived experience and end users. Monash University researchers have received $1.3 million in federal funding to update the Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for People with #Dementia. Led by medicine, neurology and aged care experts from the National Centre for Healthy Ageing (NCHA), Monash Translational Medicine and Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the forthcoming update will ensure the guideline recommendations remain at the forefront of #dementiacare, reflecting the most current scientific evidence and best practices in dementia risk reduction, diagnosis, and management. The Federal Government is facing increasing pressure to respond to the report of a parliamentary committee inquiry into #onlinegambling and its impacts on those experiencing #gamblingharm. Among other things, the report recommended a comprehensive national gambling #harmreduction strategy, improved regulation, public education and harm reduction strategies, more research, a national gambling ombudsman, and phasing out gambling advertising. Associate Professor Charles Livingstone, Head of Monash Public Health and Preventive Medicine’s Gambling and Social Determinants Unit said: “The report of the House of Representatives inquiry into online wagering was, unusually, unanimous. Members from across the political spectrum agreed that online wagering on sports and racing involved considerable risks to many who take it up.    “These risks, in many cases, become real harm to punters and their families, friends and the broader community. These harms include financial disaster, divorce and separation, mental and physical health problems, criminal activity and its consequences, including imprisonment, and enduring lifelong effects including estrangement from family, intergenerational transmission of trauma and poverty, and in some cases, suicide.    “A recent Victorian study found that 4.3 per cent of Victoria's suicides are associated with gambling harms – probably an underestimate. The Committee found that those risks could, and must, be better managed. They made 31 recommendations, broadly proposing a public health-oriented approach towards preventing and minimising gambling harm.   “Proposals for partial restrictions on gambling ads have been floated by some in government but these have met with dismay by public health and gambling reform advocates. Broadcast media and sporting codes claim an ad ban would deny them needed revenue.
