Great news for families in Katanning! Thanks to a collaborative, community-driven effort, the Katanning Early Childhood Hub is moving forward, bringing 67 long-daycare places and essential services to the Central Great Southern. This initiative, supported by the Early Years Partnership, will give parents and families easier access to the support they need to give their children the best start in life. This milestone is made possible by partnerships between local families, the Government of Western Australia, The Kids Research Institute Australia and Minderoo Foundation. Today’s announcement of a $1.6 million boost from the Cook Government brings the total investment to $9.5M, showing the power of working together to nurture healthier, happier futures for our children.

Today the Pathways to Politics for Women 2024 WA cohort delivered their stump speeches at Parliament House. As expected, the speeches were as incredible as the women themselves; the group spoke with passion and conviction about their broad yet equally important political priorities, beautifully representing the needs of WA’s many communities. From Edith Cowan to Carmen Lawrence AO and Carol Martin OAM, Western Australia has a rich history of women trailblazers in politics. Programs like Pathways to Politics for Women are critical to strengthening our democracy and building a more inclusive and equitable society. It’s a great joy to see the program now up and running in WA 👏 Congratulations to The University of Western Australia, the UWA Public Policy Institute and the Centre For Public Value UWA for hosting this year’s inaugural program. Thank you to the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with Women’s Leadership Institute and Trawalla Foundation for pioneering this initiative. It’s been our absolute pleasure to support the attendance of this year’s regional attendees.

THIS is our 'why.' Captured during our recent expedition to the Abrolhos Islands, this breathtaking moment of whales and dolphins swimming together reveals the beauty we can see—but there’s so much more beneath the surface that remains unknown. That’s where our OceanOmics team comes in. Using environmental DNA (eDNA), genomics, and AI, we’re unlocking the secrets of our oceans, ensuring marine life continues to thrive. Each expedition brings us closer to understanding the incredible biodiversity of our seas and achieving our goal of protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. The journey to discover and safeguard our oceans is just beginning…

Plastic crisis alert: your health is at risk!🚨 Today, our world leading study in collaboration with JBI at the University of Adelaide exposes the hidden dangers in everyday plastics — and the results are alarming. Key takeaways: ➡️None of the chemical classes studied are safe (Bisphenols and Phthalates, PBDE, PCBs and PFAS). ➡️ Significant risks include impacts on fertility, neurodevelopment, chronic diseases and more. This isn’t just a wake-up call, it’s a global human health emergency. We urgently need an ambitious global plastics treaty which protects human health through the regulation of chemicals of concern. While the sun has set on our fourth eDNA survey to the Abrolhos Islands, the work has only just begun! 🧬 Here’s a peek into our eDNA workflow: 1. Sample Collection: Collect water samples. ✅ 2. Filtration: Filter samples to concentrate DNA material. ✅ 3. DNA Extraction🔬: Extract the DNA from our samples in our lab. 4. PCR Amplification: Amplify fish and shark target DNA regions using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR; similar to a COVID test) to increase detectability. 5. Sequencing: Analyse the amplified DNA to identify species present. 6. Data Analysis 💻: Analyse our DNA data using bioinformatics tools to interpret species diversity and changes over time. 7. Results Interpretation 📊: Compare findings with reference databases and evaluate ecological implications. Learn more: https://edna.minderoo.org 8. Conservation Action 🌍: Use insights to guide marine conservation strategies and knowledge exchange with the Yamatji Southern Regional Corporation, contributing to our shared outcome of healthy natural ecosystems safeguarded for all generations. 🤝Expeditions are made possible by the countless individuals behind the scenes. Thank you to Thomas and Kyra, the Yamatji sea rangers who joined us, the wonderful Terrafirma Offshore crew, Parks Australia and Australian Marine Parks for their support. Want to see more of our work in the field? We’ve only just scratched the surface on all things eDNA and have a lot more to share!

Perth's recent wet and cold months remind us of a harsh reality: every night, 1,400 people in our city and over 9,000 across WA face homelessness. Nationally, this number reaches 120,000.   Our team were lucky enough to attend St Pat's 'Walk With a Worker' this week to learn more about the vital role their incredible staff and volunteers play in our community. With joy and compassion, they come together to provide essential services and support to those experiencing homelessness. We caught up with Jaron Green, who shared his incredible story of how St Patrick's Community Support Centre has transformed his life. You can read his (tearjerking!) blog here: https://lnkd.in/ghqhB-pA   In recognition of National Homelessness Week, we are proud to support St Pat's new facility in Fremantle with a contribution of $4 million towards a health centre and 28 homes for those in need.

“To fully realise the potential of philanthropy, we need a reimagined approach—one that is strategic, collaborative and committed to addressing the root causes of inequality.”   Our CEO John Hartman shared his thoughts on the Australian philanthropic sector with the The Australian Financial Review today as the Minderoo team heads to Philanthropy Australia’s sold out conference this week. Collecting over 350 eDNA samples in ten days? We’re up for the challenge! Our OceanOmics team is half way through their expedition in the Abrolhos Islands. The samples they collect will allow us to better measure, understand and conserve life in the ocean. Stay tuned for more footage from the Indian Ocean…

Long-term research on southern right whales (SRW) has captured incredible data over the past 33 years, thanks to the amazing work of Australian Right Whale Research. Each whale has a unique ID, allowing them to study the giants in a non-invasive and cost-effective way. What is SRW research indicating? -population is only 20% of its historical abundance -2023 was the lowest recorded count since 1993 -in recent years there has been an increase in calving intervals ...all of which highlight the significant impacts of climate change. Data from these studies will help shape policies to protect these endangered giants and ensure healthier oceans for our future. Stay tuned to learn more! Australian Right Whale Research's collaboration with the Yalata Aboriginal Community and the Aboriginal Lands Trust has been fundamental to their success, fostering community awareness, education, training and stewardship. These drone images were collected under our permit M26085-12. #SouthernRightWhales #MarineConservation #OceanHealth
