About us

Formerly Rail Projects Victoria, Metro Tunnel Project (MTP) is part of the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA) which oversees major transport and health infrastructure projects across Victoria. The busy Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines will run through the Metro Tunnel, freeing up space in the City Loop and giving passengers more connections and more choice and 5 new world class underground stations. The Metro Tunnel Project Office is responsible for overseeing the final stages of construction, testing and commissioning to get ready for opening in 2025.

    Since construction of the Metro Tunnel began in 2016 the iconic St Kilda Road has seen many changes, the latest being the completion of major construction on Anzac Station.  The station – the third of five new state-of-the-art stations to be finished – will provide a quick and easy rail connection to the Domain area, including the Shrine of Remembrance and Royal Botanic Gardens.    Located on St Kilda Road, Anzac Station has 4 entrances with stairs, lifts and escalators that link to a new pedestrian underpass beneath busy St Kilda Road.    Anzac Station has been designed as a “pavilion in the park” with its signature 85m long, 21m wide timber canopy’s skylights filling the station with natural light, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.    The tram stop, which opened in 2022, has extra-long platforms that can fit 4 trams at a time for large crowds attending events such as Anzac Day and the Melbourne Grand Prix.    The stop will be Melbourne’s first direct tram/train interchange, providing a seamless connection between tram and train services, while the station takes pressure off the world’s busiest tram corridor.

    Construction of the Metro Tunnel's eastern entrance in South Yarra has been completed. To mark the occasion we held a Community Day on Saturday 24 August, inviting locals to come celebrate in the newly upgraded South Yarra Siding Reserve. Beginning with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, there was live music and entertainment, free activities, and food and drinks to enjoy. After being closed to the public in 2018, the South Yarra Siding Reserve now features more than 2400 square metres of lawn, landscaping, new pedestrian and bike paths, improved lighting and a new picnic area with seating. This event was delivered through a collaboration with our construction partners Cross Yarra Partnership and Rail Network Alliance, both of which delivered critical infrastructure works in the area including: - connecting the Metro Tunnel to the Cranbourne/Pakenham rail line - widening of the rail corridor and construction of the decline structure - removal of two Tunnel Boring Machines - installation of communications and power equipment for the tunnel - rebuilding the William Street bridge.

    We've opened up new sections of separated bike lanes along St Kilda Road next to our Anzac Station work site. These sections complete the bike lanes delivered by our colleagues at Major Road Projects Victoria last year.

    Celebrating 1 year of cycling on the new St Kilda Road Bike Lanes 🚴♂️ The remaining section next to the new Metro Tunnel Project Anzac Station recently opened to complete this full stretch of bike lanes between Linlithgow Avenue and St Kilda Junction. One year on, the upgrades to St Kilda Road—Victoria’s busiest tram corridor and a premier cycling route—are making a significant impact. By separating bikes from traffic, we’ve enhanced safety for the thousands of cyclists who use St Kilda Road daily to commute to and from the CBD.     At Arden Station, we're excited to unveil the completion of Abdul Abdullah's large-scale artwork, Come Together. The stunning artwork, featuring two large-scale aluminium hands, recreates J.S. Calder’s painting ‘View from Royal Park across West Melbourne Swamp’ (1860) on a vibrant mosaic background. Over the past two weeks, crews have been installing the large-scale aluminium hands that now reach across the mosaic background in a welcoming gesture, representing the coming together of people connected to the Arden area – from the First Peoples of the Kulin Nation, subsequent waves of migration, and to the future generations when Arden will be transformed into a new precinct. ‘I grew up next to a train station and I always saw it as a nexus point of different communities coming together.’ – Abdul Abdullah Abdullah, a seventh-generation Muslim Australian of mixed ethnicity, uses his art to address complex feelings of displacement and alienation associated with histories of diaspora and migration. His work has been exhibited at Australian institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia and the Museum of Contemporary Art.  In 2019, he was awarded the inaugural Australian Muslim Artist Art Prize.     Take a look inside Arden Station’s stunning architecture. The architecture design team’s ‘loose-fit’ interior design exposes the civil engineering, making the brightly coloured design fixtures really pop. The fittings are the same across all stations, which means reduced costs of design, manufacturing and maintenance. Plus, they can easily be added to, removed or replaced down the track, without requiring significant changes to the rest of the station interior, future-proofing the stations. #MetroTunnel #ArdenStation #Melbourne #Design

    Last month, we conducted the first passenger load tests with two High-Capacity Metro Trains. This testing allows us to safely see how trains perform in the new tunnel with a full load of passengers, without any humans on board (except our drivers!). This incredible feat involved filling 42 1000-litre water tanks and almost 6,000 15-litre water bottles per train, simulating the weight of around 2000 passengers. By using water instead of other materials like sand, we minimise the risk of damage to the carriages.
