Joining Mercy Ships provides a unique opportunity, but serving in one’s home country adds an even deeper emotional connection. Recently, several volunteers from Sierra Leone had the privilege of imparting hope and healing right on their home turf. Edwina Dumbuya, a galley volunteer, reflects on her experience: “What Mercy Ships is doing is a great thing, and I am blessed to be a part of it.” For these volunteers, their roles extend far beyond mere employment; they see it as a mission. On board the #GlobalMercy, Hassan was treated for an abdominal hernia – the same problem that took his father's life just a few years earlier. For 15-year-old Hassan, successful surgery meant being able to step up as the man of the house to take care of his mother and sister. Grateful but nervous, Hassan described the moments before his surgery began; "The first thing they told me was not to be afraid or panic, and that I should relax. Then they gave me a bed and a warm blanket. The nurses gave me oxygen to breathe and after I breathed three or four times, I went to sleep... When I woke up, the surgery was completely over." Hassan's story is just one of many we see every day on board our hospital ships, currently docked in #SierraLeone and #Madagascar. You can make a difference for people like Hassan and his family. Consider becoming a donor or volunteer with Mercy Ships today – learn more at https://lnkd.in/gvgYJUwt #MercyShips #GlobalMercy #Hope #Healing #SierraLeone #4Change #ChangeMakers
