Claire Stuchbery is in Chicago this week for the LION: Local Independent Online News Publishers Independent News Sustainability Summit. Today, a group of news publishers gathered for a 'pregame doubleheader' organised by Broadstreet Ads. The afternoon was a series of lightning talks, sharing ideas that have worked well and learnings from the field. The group then headed out to the baseball field, providing a great opportunity to connect with like-minded news publishers ahead of the conference event which begins tomorrow. The challenges and opportunities faced by local and independent news publishers are similar across the globe. This event is a great opportunity to hear about what's working in news media to be of service to our communities.

About us
The Local Independent News Association (LINA) was established in 2022 to expand into the local news industry in Australia. Local media has become a critical element of the media landscape in Australia. LINA ensures that local audiences are served with high-quality coverage of local, original and public-interest news of important issues. Helping the existing local media, LINA’s passion is to grow, and to encourage new hyperlocal media entrants by providing capacity building support, expert advice and access to critical third-party services, giving a deeper level of hands-on support to many organisations.

Claire Stuchbery and Nell O'Shea Carre are in Canberra this week talking to government on how to support local and independent newsrooms, particularly those producing public interest journalism, through wide-scale industry transition. We've chatted with elected representatives from all major parties — Labor, Liberal, Nationals, Greens, as well as Independents and the Department of Communications. Across the board the feedback for LINA is that the strength of our editorial policies for member publishers, who must be independently owned and producing quality news, is what is driving bipartisan support for LINA's work. We've been talking deductible gift recipient (DGR) status for newsrooms, Meta and the news media bargaining code, and whole-of-government responses to support local and independent news to mitigate the threats of mis and disinformation. To quote Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones: "We are acutely aware of the need...." Find out more about LINA's policy work in our latest submissions: https://lnkd.in/eAwt_6Xe
