About us
Living My Way Limited is a Not-For-Profit organisation that supports people with a disability to empower them to live life their way. Living My Way Limited (formerly known as Allowance Inc until 2014) was formed in 1992 by a group of people with severe physical disabilities led by disability rights advocate, the late Kevin Byrne AM. The founding group was among the first to participate in a pilot study of Australia’s first Attendant Care Allowance Model (a self-managed package) initiated during the 1980s by the Commonwealth government. The government invited 24 individuals with varying disabilities and lifestyles to apply for the opportunity to participate in a study that would enable them to have choice and control by becoming registered employers for two years. The notion of a person with a disability having choice and control in the 1980s was groundbreaking and unheard of in the ‘world of disability'. The creation of the Allowance Model was life-changing. Being ‘in the driver’s seat’ not only met their needs but the hours could be adapted to suit individual lifestyles and offered flexibility that enabled the pursuit of social, recreational and career objectives. Our services allow Members to employ their own Support Worker and provide them with the freedom to get back to living. To that end, we also work alongside our Members to ensure they always feel supported throughout their journey. We are a Registered NDIS Plan Manager, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Nursing, Personal Care, Community Access and Support Coordination Service Provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

We recently helped our Member Paul* gain approval for a new box trailer to transport his power wheelchair and his beloved fishing gear! 🎉 Paul, who has always loved the outdoors 🌲, is now all set to explore and do what he enjoys most— fishing and going on adventures with greater ease and independence. Our Support Coordinator worked closely with Paul to help make this happen, ensuring the trailer suited his needs. This new addition means Paul can now travel comfortably with all his equipment, allowing him to enjoy his favorite activities. Whether he's off to a peaceful spot by the water or exploring new terrains, he now has greater freedom to dive into the outdoors the way he loves best! 🦽 *name changed for privacy reasons #memberstories #AssistiveTechnology #Independence #FishingAdventures #supportcoordination

🌟 In recognition of Carers Week, we wanted to share a story from Fiona, the wife of our Member Garth. Over five years ago, Garth was travelling to a friend’s wedding overseas when he got very sick. He was able to return to Australia a few months later, for more treatment and eventually became an amputee. Suddenly, it was like everything their family knew had been taken away. "In the early days being a physio with Intensive Care experience helped me feel at home at the hospital. I knew the health lingo and understood how it all worked, which was sometimes good and bad. The love Garth has for his family made him determined to get cracking quickly. ‘I don’t have a choice, I have two little girls, and I’m not wallowing or giving up.’ When he came home from the hospital, I went back to work three days a week. I don’t know how we would have survived without our Support Workers, as before Garth had his prosthetics, we all needed more help. Our Support Workers took over some of that role from me, and I think that was nice for Garth as well. They supported our daughters and helped our family where we needed it. We’ve had both of our Support Workers right from the beginning, helping us all the way through, and we trust them with our family. Garth is just a normal Dad but also a superhero in the eyes of his daughters – they don’t see disability as a barrier at all. He loves nothing more than doing the normal running around for our kids." 🌼 It’s National Carers Week and we are recognising the many carers from our community! With the theme Millions of Reasons to Care, we’re acknowledging the 3 million Australians who provide care and support to loved ones. Here are some tips from Carers Australia to support our carers this week and beyond: ✅ Offer to help – Whether it’s running errands 🛒 or preparing a meal 🍲, small gestures can ease their load. 👂 Listen – Sometimes just being there to listen is a great way to offer support. 💆♀️ Encourage self-care – Support them to take breaks and look after their own wellbeing. 📞 Stay connected – Regular check-ins, even a simple message can make all the difference. 📚 Learn more – Educate yourself on what they do and how you can better support them. #NationalCarersWeek #MillionsOfReasonsToCare #millionsofreasonstocare #NDIS

Dr Peterson is a 38-year-old doctor and local city Councillor living in Orange with his wife and family. In 2018 he had an accident while riding his bicycle to work at the Orange Emergency Department and became a quadriplegic. Steve has taken charge of his care and Support Workers, discovering the freedom and control it offered him... He shares his story: "Over the last six years, I’ve had quite the journey when it comes to managing my own care and Support Workers. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve found taking a more hands-on approach has given me the flexibility and control I need to live the life I want. Initially, I struggled to maintain a consistent roster, and there were far too many days when my Support Workers wouldn’t show up. When I switched providers, that made all the difference, and now I manage a wide range of shifts myself, which means I directly coordinate with my Support Workers. I’ve had a long-term relationship with icare who have been invaluable. They recommended that I connect with Living My Way and I’m really glad I did, as they have been incredibly helpful in ensuring I meet all the employment law obligations, and onboarding new carers. Their expertise has been a game-changer for me, as I don’t have a lot of experience in that realm." We’re proud to partner with icare and help clients like Steve in their journey towards greater independence. 💪🌟 #DisabilitySupport #Independence #LivingMyWay #icare #Empowerment #Community
