How is the stigma in your workplace? In a recent LGPro VIC (Local Government Professionals) webinar, I presented "Breaking down mental health stigma." 20 local councils rated stigma at work. I am really pleased to see 45% rated stigma as low. This is definitely moving in the right direction. The comments made were from concerned employees who are struggling with exec buy in and high to very high stigma at work. The good news is, you have positive change coming. In the Safework Australia code of practice: Managing psychosocial hazards at work, it states: A PCBU (person conducting a business or undertaking) must ensure, as far as is reasonable practicable, workers and other persons are not exposed to risks in the workplace, or that is not reasonable practicable, minimise these risks as far as is reasonably practicable. What does this mean? On the ground this means execs and directors are legally responsible to identify hazards, assess risks, control the risks and monitor. The outcome of this work, means employees will feel more cared for, with a safe space to report and discuss risks at work. Most likely, your managers and directors will need to upskill in how to have these conversations and boost mental health literacy. If you need help to break down mental health stigma at work, know your legal obligations or boost mental health awareness, reach out to me. We are doing lots of work in this space, especially in Victoria. #mentalhealthadvocate #localgovt #localgovernment #localcouncil #victoria #leadresearcher #keynotespeaker #psychosocialsafety
