I was recently speaking to a room full of first-year commerce students about finding their career path, and my presentation really had two key messages: consider all the possibilities, and what you put in is what you get out. I did a Bachelor of Science with the aim of going into medicine but then pivoted to accounting at the last minute. Considering the possibilities of an accounting career and taking a chance on that path has led me to an interesting and varied career, full of opportunities. I’m now an Assistant Manager in Audit and can honestly say that the idea that accounting is dull and means always sitting behind a desk is a complete myth. I work with clients directly, understanding their businesses, goals and needs, plus I work across different industries with people from a variety of backgrounds. No two days are ever the same in my job. The more interest you show, the more engaged you are and the more you’ll get out of it – whatever it is that you’re doing. I take that approach to everything in my life: take opportunities. A great opportunity I had recently was a three-month secondment to the KPMG Toronto office. I saw snow for the first time, experienced the Canadian way of life, and learnt a lot – all because of my work! My journey into engineering began with a passion for problem-solving and a curiosity about how things work. During my electrical engineering degree, I was one of only seven female students in a class of eighty. This experience taught me resilience and the importance of community among women in engineering. After graduation, I embarked on my career in the automotive industry, as a production engineer, stepping into a predominantly male workplace. Navigating this environment was not easy, but it also provided me with invaluable experiences and the opportunity to prove that gender does not define capability. At KPMG, I am fortunate to work in an environment that values equality and diversity, and I am grateful for the support of not just the female colleagues around me but also some of the male colleagues who undoubtedly are there to support my growth and success. Along with my commitment to my role within the Engineering & Asset Management team, I have been able to work part-time, be a mother of two, and enjoy the flexibility at work. Even though there are days that are stressful and tiring, I am proud to say that I’m able to balance work and life on most days. Of course, I wouldn’t be able to do this without the support of my husband, who has been my rock through it all and is also an engineer. Engineering is not just about technical skills; it is about creativity, teamwork, and the ability to think critically. I want to encourage young women and girls who are considering a career in engineering to back yourself and trust that your ideas are valuable. Confidence in your abilities and contributions is essential – believe in your unique perspective and advocate for your place at the table. Seek out mentors and actively build your professional network to open doors to new opportunities. Explore Life at KPMG at https://lnkd.in/gtkwMXnB
