The National Strategy for Volunteering’s first three-year action plan launches today. Developed with input from the volunteering ecosystem, Action Plan 2024-2027 contains key priorities that will shape the next phase of the National Strategy for Volunteering. Justice Connect has endorsed the Migrant Justice Institute’s report: ‘All work, no pay - Improving the legal system for migrants can get the wages they are owed,’ which explores the barriers faced by migrant workers when trying to claim back their unpaid wages. 18 months since the Federal Government's commitment to #FixFundraising, progress to harmonise Australia's fundraising laws has been painfully slow. "Australia continues to have out of date, complex, and inconsistent fundraising laws that impose unnecessary burdens on charities, diverting limited resources away from their critical work helping people in need at a time when the charity sector is facing increasing demand for services and a very strained funding environment." Community legal centres are at breaking point. Funding shortages and overwhelming demand are forcing centres to turn away over 1,000 people each day and reduce services to local communities across the country. The crisis will only worsen until the sector secures a guarantee of ongoing funding. The costs to our communities of the chronic underfunding of community legal centres include: 🏥 More people in prisons and hospitals 👨👧👧 Women and children stuck in dangerous situations for longer 🏡 People losing their homes and being pushed into homelessness 💰 Households and individuals overwhelmed by debt and financial problems 💔 Families stuck in conflict over custody, child support and family law issues ❗ Asylum seekers facing exploitation due to their visa status.
