October 14 is Allied Health Professions Day. It celebrates and brings together the allied health professional community. This year the main theme ‘Stronger together’, highlights the benefits of multidisciplinary team-based care. Allied health professionals play a key role in the health and wellbeing of all Australians. They are recognised alongside their nursing and medical colleagues for their role in designing and implementing a comprehensive healthcare system, that truly wraps around the consumer. https://lnkd.in/gww4kwmJ

What is Power? And what can we do with it? I’m attending the ARCS Australia educational session on “Understanding power in the workplace”. Key points… Power is the capacity to influence to achieve certain objectives and to drive actions and decisions. It can be used positively and it can also be abused. French and Raven (social psychologists) identified 6 bases power: 1. Legitimate power - power and influence that comes from the position and title. The scope of the power is limited to situations others believe you have a right to control. 2. Reward power - being able to give out rewards (pay, promotion, desirable assignments, training opportunities) 3. Coercive power - comes from the belief that a person can punish others for noncompliance. Can cause dissatisfaction and resentment, and can be perceived as bullying. 4. Informational power - results from a person’s ability to control information that others need to accomplish something. Can be used to help others, or as a bargaining tool against them. 5. Expert power - knowledge and skills that enable you to understand a situation, suggest solutions, and generally outperform others. People listen to you and respect you, and look to that person for leadership in that area. 6. Referent power - comes from one person liking and respecting another, and identifying with them in some way. By understanding these bases of power people can better influence others. Alternatively if power is being used on you you can better respond by knowing the frameworks. Expert power is the skill to develop - it makes you credible, knowledgeable and helpful; and people are more likely to listen to you. Importantly it’s a skill to continuously develop.
