We are thrilled to be attending the 11th Annual Legal Profession Breakfast later this month at Brisbane City Hall. Hosted by the Queensland Law Society and bringing together hundreds of professionals across the legal industry, all proceeds from this milestone event will help Women's Legal Service Queensland (WLSQ) provide free legal and support services to Queensland women and children impacted by domestic and family violence. HopgoodGanim is proud to be a major sponsor of this year’s event and to support WLSQ in their efforts to reduce domestic and family violence. Find out more about WLSQ or donate here: https://wlsq.org.au/

On June 18, 2024, it became an offence in Queensland to breach the general environmental duty in the Environmental Protection Act 1994. In July 2024, the Victorian Supreme Court handed down reasons for judgment considering the Victorian formulation of the general environmental duty. Given the similarities in the two jurisdictions the case is helpful guidance. In this article, Special Counsel in HopgoodGanim’s Planning and Environment team, Olivia Williamson, considers the guidance the Victorian case provides in understanding when there might be a breach of the general environmental duty in Queensland: https://lnkd.in/gfzJJzyP

We were delighted to attend and present an award at the 2024 UDIA Queensland Awards for Excellence last week. Held as the Industry's premier awards event spanning several categories from urban renewal to design, the Awards for Excellence recognise and celebrate developers that create inspiring places for Queenslanders to live, work, and play. Sarah Macoun, a Partner in our Planning and Environment practice, was proud to award the Young Leaders Award to Samuel Gardner (Gardner Vaughan Group). A huge congratulations to our client, Aria Property Group, for being recognised for their outstanding work on Upper House in South Brisbane, which claimed four awards at the event, including the prestigious Project of the Year Award. Thank you to UDIA Queensland for having us and congratulations to all the nominees and recipients at this year’s Awards.

Last week we doubled-down on the firm celebrations in Perth, to commemorate both our 50th Anniversary and 10 years since opening our doors in Western Australia. Starting with a branded ‘HG Orange’ cocktail, the evening was a relaxed celebration with colleagues, clients and firm friends from both sides of the country, expressing our deep gratitude to those who have played a key role in the story and the success of HopgoodGanim. We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us to make this a truly special anniversary. We were thrilled to be a Lithium Sponsor and to present at the 2024 Energy & Resources Law Association Annual Conference last week. Held over two days in Brisbane, the Conference saw leading experts share practical insights on global trends in relation to this year’s theme of 'Navigating the Critical Path: Charting Excellence in Energy and Resources Law.' Jonathan Fulcher, Consultant in our Resources and Energy practice, spoke at the Young Professionals Development Satellite before the Conference and on day one, Partner James Plumb discussed competing rights of access for energy transition projects, traditional mining, and oil & gas projects located in the same area. Associate Molly Shelton also provided an update on climate change litigation in Australia. We had a great time connecting and learning from other energy and resources professionals and look forward to the next Conference!
