Earlier this week, HESTA CEO Debby Blakey met with Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General and CEO of the United Nations Global Compact, after she participated in the Uniting Business conference, an event focused on shaping the future of sustainable business in Australia. Ms Ojiambo leads the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. During their meeting, they discussed responsible investment, active ownership, and shared focuses such as climate action and its intersection with nature loss, gender equality, and decent work. We believe these areas are pivotal in shaping a better future for HESTA members and society. The United Nations estimates that 80% of people displaced by climate change are women, exacerbating economic vulnerabilities and risks of exploitation. Navigating the lead-up to retirement sees many of our members seek advice about several common scenarios and inevitabilities that come with transitioning into life after work. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread awareness, support those affected, and work towards better prevention and treatment. For the last 27 years, HESTA has proudly partnered with the Mother's Day Classic Foundation — a national run/walk event aimed at raising awareness and funds for breast and, more recently, ovarian cancer research. Over this period, the Mother's Day Classic community has donated an incredible $47.3 million to National Breast Cancer Foundation and Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). These events are made possible through the generous support of volunteers, and in 2025 we’re proud to share that HESTA will also be supporting the Mother’s Day Classic Volunteer Program. With around 80% of our 1 million plus members being women, with many who work within health and community services, they know all too well the impact both breast cancer and ovarian cancer have on the community.
