By the end of 2025, headspace Early Psychosis will reach an important milestone: the expansion of the program into every state and territory in Australia. 71% of young people in the Early Psychosis program improved significantly in 2022-23, and with the upcoming opening of headspace Canberra (ACT) and headspace Eastern Shore (TAS), young people will be able to access the headspace Early Psychosis program in a total of 16 locations across Australia. We’re continuing to work with government and local communities in advocating for more Early Psychosis services across Australia. Today is R U OK? Day. This year’s theme is ‘Ask R U OK? Any Day’, which encourages year-round conversations about mental health to help prevent small things from becoming big things. At headspace, supporting young people and their families to start conversations about mental health is a big part of what we do. Remember, you don’t need to be an expert to have an R U OK? conversation with a young person in your life. Listening and giving them your time might be just what they need to help them through. We’ve come together with Australia’s leading mental health organisations to advocate for an evidence-based approach to online safety that centres the nuanced needs and experiences of young people. headspace CEO Jason Trethowan said: “While the challenges and dangers associated with social media are clear, we also know there are important benefits to be found online. “Social media provides young people with opportunities for connection and to have their voices heard, especially young people who belong to marginalised communities or who live in remote places. “Social media is also one of the ways that young people learn about mental health and the supports available to them. “Banning access to social media is a blunt instrument that may have unintended consequences if done before considering these benefits.” Read the full joint statement below, or read Jason’s perspective here: https://bit.ly/4gms6kA ReachOut Australia, Black Dog Institute, Beyond Blue, Prevention United, ARACY, PROJECT ROCKIT, Suicide Prevention Australia, Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia, LGBTIQ+ Health Australia

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. At headspace, we recognise the vital role that friends, family schools and communities can have in improving a young person’s mental health outcomes. This year’s theme is a reminder of the importance of a young person’s circle of care and highlights that we all have a role in raising awareness, encouraging help-seeking and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. While it is clear that many young people use social media, the impacts on their mental health are less well understood – and can be both positive and negative. headspace is committed to listening to young people about the issues that impact them. The ongoing social media debate needs to take into account the complexity of young people's relationship with the online world. That's why we've partnered with Orygen on a submission to the Joint Select Committee on Social Media and Australian Society, calling on the government to listen to young people's nuanced experiences. Together, we can work towards an evidence-based solution that ensures young people are safe, connected and empowered. Swipe to read our take on social media on youth mental health ➡️  Read the full joint submission with headspace and Orygen here:  https://bit.ly/4ga1cMC
