We’re excited to see the completion of the first three of six buildings we’ve designed for Local: Residential: Kensington. With the remaining buildings due for completion by Christmas, the precinct of 400 new apartments will reflect a noticeable market shift towards build-to-rent development, offering residents uncommon amenity and vibrancy of lifestyle with the convenience of urban living and nearby public transport. The architecture of the Macaulay Road building celebrates elements of old Kensington, with brick masonry to sculptural archways and ground floor planters, and expressed dark metals that draw on the suburb’s industrial past. Incorporating rooftop terraces and open-air lanes, walkways, and stairwells, the design prioritises amenity, fresh air, and natural light. A palette of tactile materials at ground level and street edge offers welcome engagement to passers-by and the neighbourhood at large. Advancing our focus on the social value of communal spaces, an impressive suite of residential amenities includes a pool, gym, yoga studio, private rooms and nooks for quiet work, lounge spaces with shared kitchens and dining areas, as well as a play zone featuring a cinema and art studio.

Hayball celebrates the latest milestone in our ongoing social value research with the publishing of a significant paper entitled Social Value in the Built Environment: Lessons from Housing Case Studies. Social value in the built environment is defined here as the net positive change in wellbeing impacted by design; its role in our practice has evolved over recent years to become a central pillar in the design and delivery of Hayball projects. The research was produced by Associate and Social Value Lead, Eilish Barry, and draws on two recent Hayball housing projects – Redfern Place in Sydney and CRT+YRD in Melbourne – to consider how social value can be forecast and measured. The paper was made possible with the collaborative support of Bridge Housing Limited and the Australian Social Value Bank, and the financial support of a The Alastair Swayn Foundation Design Thinking grant. The research builds on our 2023 pilot study for which we won the Innovation in Social Impact Measurement category in the 2023 awards of SIMNA (Social Impact Measurement Network Australia). It's been a bee-sy week! 🐝 🐞 So excited to be partnering with City of Parramatta to improve biodiversity. My wild garden is now home to native stingless beehive (Tetragonula Carbonaria), along with a whole host of other native bees and small animals. Since going 'wild', we have seen a dramatic increase in beneficial insects and small native animals visiting and residing in our garden, vital for pollination and function of our ecosystem. Enhancing biodiversity is a critical part of restoring Country. Looking after our non-human kin also helps us thrive! Did you know: 1. Native bees have a specialised relationship with our native flora. The survival of one is intricately linked to the other. 2. Research has shown Australian native bees are not affected by Varroa Mites due to their different biology to the European honeybees. Australian native bees and insects plays a critical role in pollination and our food security. I'm so lucky to be able to channel my passion for biodiversity and conservation in my personal & Hayball life, working closely with John Siemon, Sophie Daniel, Jarryd Kelly and Mike Elgey at Botanic Gardens of Sydney and Lisa Kollaras, Giselle Gagliano at City of Parramatta. Caring for Country looks and feels great!!

The Enhancing Spatial Literacy program at Evelyn Scott School, run in collaboration with Hayball, Monash University, and Evelyn Scott School, gained recognition overseas in Portland, Oregon, receiving the A4LE-Association for Learning Environments Kelley Tanner Innovation Award!   The interdisciplinary team, Dr Fiona Young, PhD (Hayball), Dr Dion Tuckwell (Monash University), and Principal Jackie Vaughan (Evelyn Scott School), created an innovative Teacher Professional Learning Program aimed at bridging the gap in the design and delivery of new school environments and utilising new learning spaces. The program was developed as a continuation of the Making Space methodology, an initiative emerged from research collaboration between Dion and Fiona.   For more information about the award and the project, please visit the LEA's https://lnkd.in/gSDRitRy

NEW RESEARCH – Social Value in the Built Environment by Eilish Barry at Hayball and the Australian Social Value Bank The measurement of social value in the built environment aims to capture the changes in social, environmental, and economic wellbeing of those directly and indirectly impacted by design. Social value is a key focus for many architecture practices and clients, who strive to create spaces that enhance wellbeing. However, until now, measuring this impact has been challenging. This research seeks to share insights and demonstrate how a clear, standardised methodology can be applied across different project stages. By adopting a systematic approach to creating, measuring, and delivering social value, architects are better positioned to consistently improve project outcomes. This project was supported by an Alastair Swayn Foundation DESIGN THINKING research grant. Don't miss the opportunity to join Learning Environments New Zealand webinar on 'Standardisation in School Design' on Tuesday, 22 October. Fiona Young, PhD, Integrative Design & Strategy Lead at Hayball, and Rachel Liang, Graduate of Architecture at DunnHillam Architecture + Urban Design, will revisit the University of Technology Sydney Masters Studio "Unschooling: Taking School Out of the Box," which explored the challenges facing standardised school development in NSW and beyond. These challenges include population growth, rapid urbanisation, and the urgent need for school facilities, as well as how to deliver new and refurbished schools equitably, sustainably, and pedagogically appropriate for the future. "Unschooling: Taking School Out of the Box" was co-led by Hayball Principal Fiona Young, PhD, Associate Robert Chan, and Hiral Patel from Cardiff University. Hayball has been honoured to collaborate with the Brisbane Boys' College community in the co-creation of their Master Plan Campus Vision. The latest issue of the school’s Collegian magazine (link below) is a Special Edition dedicated to unveiling the Master Plan Campus Vision. In the article titled ‘Form Follows Function,’ Hayball Principal Graham Legerton discusses the extensive consultation process that shaped this flexible framework:   “I think that it’s important that there’s been a very deep consultation process on this Master Plan Campus Vision. We’ve spoken to the boys at length, elders, the staff, the Old Collegians, the Executive, members of the community, members of the Council. The highlight of the process was the sessions with the boys. We witnessed their passion for the College and the importance that they place on culture and inclusion. As a collective team, we are all aware of the importance of being good custodians of such a unique and transformative opportunity which also embraces the College’s history and progression.”   Last week it was a pleasure for our team to attend the Master Plan Campus Vision launch event, held in the Hayball designed contemporary learning prototype which will inform future learning spaces. https://lnkd.in/gwSQFUrZ Chad Brown Andre Casson Don O'Rorke'

We were saddened to hear of the passing of renowned architect Graeme Gunn last week at the age of 91.   Graeme and our own founder, Len Hayball, practised together as Gunn Hayball from 1974 to 1982, following Len’s arrival at the practice in 1970. In the 12 years of their collaboration, they received numerous AIA awards and citations for projects as varied as the Royal South Yarra Tennis Clubhouse, Prahran Market Redevelopment, Ararat Arts Activity Centre and the Portland Aerodrome Terminal. Graeme’s contribution to the profession as both a practitioner and educator was immense, reflected by his 2011 Gold Medal from the Australian Institute of Architects. We share our sincere condolences with Graeme’s family, friends, and former colleagues.
