Our new workspace in the heart of Te Whanganui-a-Tara–Wellington marks a significant milestone for us in Aotearoa New Zealand, deepening our commitment to our clients and the region. Our goal was to rethink how we work together, seamlessly blending in-office and hybrid workstyles with the latest technology and collaborative spaces designed to inspire innovation and foster connections. Located on the Wellington Waterfront, the space weaves indigenous design elements throughout, honouring mana whenua and the region’s rich cultural heritage. The design is inspired by the cultural narratives of Te Ara Tupua and nearby areas of significance. From the movement of water in the tides and currents of the harbour, the design reflects the deep connection between the sea, the land and the people. Through cultural expressions of the region’s fauna and flora and the art of raranga, our space embodies a strong sense of place and connection for all who enter. We want to give a big thank you to Manukorihi Winiata, the artist whose work has brought these cultural narratives to life. The result is more than just a workspace—it’s an environment that nurtures the wellbeing, creativity and connection of our people while reflecting our dedication to cultural respect, environmental sustainability and community engagement. The Healing and Wellbeing Environment: Paediatric Emergency Department, Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital. A visit to the emergency department can be a stressful experience for children and their families. In response to this, our approach to the Paediatric Emergency Department at the Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital, is centred on creating an environment that not only meets medical needs but also significantly reduces the anxiety of young patients. The existing Paediatric Emergency Department faced growing demand, especially in mental health cases, highlighting the need for a thoughtful redesign. Collaborating with Silver Thomas Hanley (STH), we transformed the triage and waiting areas into bright, welcoming spaces that put children at ease from the moment they arrive. Vibrant wall graphics and interactive screens are carefully chosen to engage and distract children, providing a sense of comfort during what can be an overwhelming time. A key element of our design is the dedicated mental health assessment space, which allows for direct staff observation to provide care in a secure and supportive setting. By creating a space that feels less clinical and more inviting, we help alleviate some of the fears children might have in a healthcare environment. We improved the patient flow with an extra treatment bay for ambulance arrivals and upgraded the Extended Emergency Care Unit (EECU) to enhance the overall experience. New staff bases, consultation and utility rooms are designed to improve efficiency, while refurbished bedrooms and bathrooms are brightened to create a more positive environment that promotes healing. Our design creates spaces where children feel safe and cared for, which is crucial to their overall hospital experience. By reducing anxiety and providing a more welcoming atmosphere, we help young patients and their families have a better healthcare experience to promote healing and positive wellbeing by design. The Watercare Huia building is one of nine sites across Aotearoa New Zealand undergoing refurbishment—a much-needed upgrade as the old buildings had become outdated and no longer suited Watercare’s needs. Staff now enjoy a workplace that’s not only functional and durable but also refreshingly modern in design. By retaining the character of the exposed brick walls and steel windows, while blending them with contemporary design elements, we’ve helped to transform an old industrial space into a welcoming environment. The result is a workspace that strikes a perfect balance between functionality and warmth, reflecting Watercare’s commitment to its people.

Over the last decade, public transport in Sydney has evolved from functionally moving people to focusing on the role of transport in city-shaping. As Director of Precincts and Urban Design for 9 years at Transport for NSW, Anne Sutherland played a key role in foregrounding the value of high-quality design in transport infrastructure projects across Greater Sydney. This week, Sydney Metro officially opened the Metro service line at the recently revitalised Central Station, enhancing access to fast and reliable public transport that connects the city. Now a Director of Urban Design at GHD Design, we took the opportunity to ask Anne for her insights on how this significant development will shape the future of the city. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘰 𝘢𝘵 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘺𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘺, 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘬𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘵𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘵.” Read Anne’s full insights article: https://lnkd.in/gFJDwpjG Project photography: Tyrone Branigan GHD #GHDDesign #CentralStation #TheMetro #UrbanDesign #Architecture

Our team is thrilled to be celebrating the opening of Sydney’s new Central Station metro platforms, as part of the Sydney Metro City project - an iconic project set to transform the travel experience for thousands of people each day.   As lead designers, GHD and Aurecon delivered detailed design for the rail, civil, structural and building components of the new and upgraded rail infrastructure, with GHD Design leading the back of house architectural design.   Congratulations #SydneyMetro, Laing O'Rourke and all involved on this landmark project! We’re proud to have been part of the journey to this milestone.   #PowerOfCommitment

Vertical schools are becoming increasingly popular across Australia and provide a great way for new schools to be established where space is scarce and land is expensive. However, they also pose some unique challenges, such as space optimisation, high costs and energy efficiency.   Join us for our four-part webinar series hosted by GHD and GHD Design, as we navigate these challenges and reflect on successful vertical school projects.   In our first webinar Jane Cassidy GAICD FRAIA HON. AIA SFHEA, Michael Rumbold and Paul Thatcher will explore strategies to enhance vertical schools by improving movement efficiency, energy usage and incorporating learning into their design.    Learn more and register now: https://lnkd.in/gQkcDqqT   #PowerOfCommitment #VerticalSchools #Education #FutureOfEducation
