About us
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) was established in 2002 to develop a sustainable property industry in Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions. To drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards: -Sustainability - by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations -Integration - of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings. To achieve these objectives, the GBCA runs the Green Star environmental rating system, education and advocacy efforts in sustainable building practices, and events on the national and international levels.

As the saying goes, “You have to know the past to understand the present”. That’s exactly what we did with GBCA Senior Manager Jamie Wallis to take a look back on how revolutionary Green Star Performance v1 has been over the past decade, and to understand how this history has informed the recently released, Green Star Performance v2. “The true success story of Green Star Performance is its take-up in so many sectors – in industrial, retail, retirement living, as well as office,” Jamie reflects. “Asset owners of any building type could pick up Green Star Performance and use it.” In our interview with Jamie, we reflect on a range of project teams who have utilised v1 and transformed their projects. Some of the “firsts” include: 🏢 The GPT Group, the first ever Green Star Performance rating 🏢 Wollongong City Council, the first 5 Star rating 🏢 Frasers Property Limited, the first portfolio rating 🏢 NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, the first government agency to attain a rating Learn more about the history of Green Star Performance v1 here > https://lnkd.in/g2XNaZ8U

We can finally announce that Eumemmerring Business Park in Dandenong South, Victoria, is the first industrial, and the second ever project to achieve a Green Star Buildings certification, with a 5 Star Green Star rating representing Australian excellence. Goodman acquired the 1970s industrial relic in 2019 and took the opportunity to turn it into a beacon of modern sustainability. With a vision rooted in circular design, Goodman revitalised the site into a cutting-edge, resilient business precinct. 🌻See how they turned an old electrical parts site into a 5 Star Green Star rated project >> https://lnkd.in/gxz8_vuP #sustainability #greenbuilding

ISPT’s purpose is to create better futures which is why we are thrilled to welcome ISPT as the first property company to join us as a circular economy principal partner. The built environment has a substantive opportunity to contribute to Australia’s growing circular economy. As part of this partnership, we will work with ISPT’s ESG and Innovation teams to use an innovation framework to rapidly explore, design and pilot circular strategies and tactics, inspiring the next generation of sustainable interiors. Taryn Cornell, Senior manager strategy and development at GBCA says partnerships like this are necessary to spark industry-wide action towards a circular economy, “This partnership is a chance to work and learn from each other. There is abundant potential to reduce waste and embodied carbon in existing buildings, refurbishments and fitouts. ISPT is showing how this can be done today.” We recently spoke to Taryn, Steven Peters, Chief Sustainability Officer, and Grainne Kearns, Chief Technology Officer ISPT, about the partnership and ISPT's vision for a circular future - https://lnkd.in/g7XEcbB8

What happens when change makers lean in at the same moment in time? In her latest contribution to our Green Building Voice newsletter, our CEO Davina Rooney writes that the answer to this question is playing out around Australia right now as governments lean in from all directions. And while policy turns into action, it is our role at GBCA to keep things moving so there isn’t a traffic jam of opportunity.
