Our medical research will transform healthcare. We explore the full spectrum of disease to live life to the fullest.
About us
For more than 50 years the Garvan Institute of Medical Research has pioneered insights into some of the most widespread diseases affecting our community today. Garvan's mission is to make significant contributions to medical research that will change the directions of science and medicine and have major impacts on human health. Garvan strives to enhance and develop research programs that combine fundamental science with strong clinical interactions. Research at Garvan is focused upon understanding the role of genes and molecular and cellular processes in health and disease as the basis for developing future preventions, treatments and cures. For over 50 years, significant breakthroughs have been achieved by Garvan scientists in the understanding and treatment of diseases such as: * Cancer * Diabetes and obesity * Neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, hearing loss, mental illnesses and eating disorders * Osteoporosis * Immunological diseases such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Sjogren's syndrome Garvan's ultimate goal is prevention, treatment or cure of these major diseases.

🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 We are pleased to announce installation of the PacBio Onso sequencing system at Garvan – the first of its kind in Australasia. This new addition to our sequencing capabilities will support high-accuracy short-read sequencing for genomic and transcriptomic research. We look forward to integrating this technology into our workflows and offering the sequencing service to the scientific community. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this system online. #Genomics #Transcriptomics #Research PacBio

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks once again to the Heart of the Green community for raising over $84,000 at the Golf Day in honour of Josh Avvenevole. Josh’s family expressed, “May his legacy be to save others of a similar age and families of a similar adoration”. These vital funds will be directed to Associate Professor Jodie Ingles' research on inherited heart diseases and sudden cardiac death. Did you know 2.8 million people worldwide are affected by multiple sclerosis (MS)? The myelin sheath is an insulating layer which forms around nerves. As you can see, this is damaged when a patient develops MS. Damage to the myelin sheath is what causes the symptoms of MS.
